In 1825, Ulysses S Grant became governor of Canada after his victory over Andrew Jackson in the Mexican American War. At this time, Quebec City was underdeveloped compared to Toronto or Montreal so Grant decided to establish a town called Wood River on the banks of the Ottawa River in what is now Wood River Township (now Rockford). Grant's idea for Wood River centered around developing a port town that would serve as an important trading center between Canada and Mexico City. He also wanted to create a market for local produce and lumber during times when these resources were not available from farther away. As development continued into the 19th century, woodworking mills opened up around town while breweries flourished thanks to Grants efforts to promote brewing throughout Canadas provinces (and beyond). During World War I, many military personnel were stationed at nearby Camp Forrest which led to increased activity around town including manufacturing munitions used in warring countries such as Germany and Austria-Hungary (today’s Hungary). Wood River is an unincorporated community in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The name is derived from thereek word "wOOD" which means "sweet wood." The community was laid out in 1853 by John Wesley Hardesty and others as a station on the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway. Wood River remained a small rural town until it amalgamated with other communities around Chicago in 1961. The first people to live in what is now Wood River were the Potawatomi Indians. By 1834, they had moved west of the Mississippi River into what is now southwestern Illinois. In 1849, settlers arrived from Kentucky who named the community for their then-recent discovery of a sweet wood near Mount Carmel (now known as Woodridge). In 1861, when Chicago became a city, many residents of nearby towns decided to unite with their new city and form the Town of Wood River. This merger resulted in the creation of an additional unincorporated community located east of downtownChicago: Washington Park West. Many residents of Wood River continued to live there after moving to Washington Park West; however, most residents chose to move away from downtownChicago after experiencing problems associated with high population density and sanitation facilities not able to keep up with increasing demand for water and trash services within the newly formed city limits. In 1984, South Side Community Development Corporation purchased property adjacent to Washington Park West that would serve as an open-air shopping center called South Side Center II. This development transformed part of south side Chicago into one of its most vibrant areas where shoppers can find world-class retailers such as Sears Holdings Corporation (Sears), JCPenney Inc., Macy's Inc., Target Corp., Kohl's Co., lowspinners like Jamba Juice Company and Dunkin' Donuts Company as well as quality restaurants like Olive Garden Italian Restaurant and Shake Shack Americanized Burger Stand among others. The first red dots were created in the early 1920s by two guys named Wilhelm Koehler and Rudolf Fuchs. Fuchs had filed a patent for his design in 1923 and it was licensed to Glock Incorporated in 1928. The original Red Dot Sight was an electro-magnetic device that utilized a light emitting diode (LED) as its indicator. It could be set up to aim using either an electronic compass or ground level corrections provided by a reticle on top of the sight itself.
