In 1773 James Kieft discovered an alkali field northwest of present day woodriver while exploring land grants granted by King George III to John Jacob Astor IV.; these grants included much valuable real estate including much woodland bordering present day woodriver eastward to Whitefish Creek & southward along what is now I-55 toward St Louis When French traders established a post at Green Bay on Lake Michigan under Pierre Elliott Trudeau in 1837 they tamed some large waterfowl hunting grounds extending into today's Wisconsin & Minnesota; these areas would be important later fur trade routes including those leading through present day woodriver . Two years later David Thompson traveled through this area via snowmobile when reporting back from his North American Exploring Expedition; he noted many good fishing spots among woods east & west of Green Bay . Intense competition between British East India Company (BIC) traders and fur traders led to numerous skirmishes or full scale wars throughout this region during second half of 19th century culminating with Canadian victory over Uprising at Battle at Missouri’s River in 1812 In 1860 Abraham Lincoln became President of United States after defeating Andrew Johnson in a close election; he appointed Major General Oliver Otis Howard commanderof Military District Of Chicago; Howard had been acting administratorof Indian Territory since December 9th previous year when Johnson was impeached following charges brought against him regarding abuses committed while serving as governor Prior to this appointment Indiana Senator Richard Douglas sponsored a resolution proposing creation Of A Department Of Interior With Powers To Regulate Commerce With The Indians Within Our Limits; however House failedTo pass Resolution On January 5th 1861 due To Opposition From Southern Democrats Facing Impunity After Confederate Army Overran Kentucky And Tennessee During The War Between Northern And Southern States confiscating all property owned by Rebels/Confederates
