In the early days of technology, sights were crude and rudimentary. The first lasers were created in the early 1960s by physicists at Bell Labs. In 1967, physicist Jack Kilby developed a Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) that used light pulses to measure gravitational waves. This allowed us to visualize the universe as a giant hologram with different colors and dimensions across space-time.
The town of Wood River was founded in 1836 by a group of men from the area. The town quickly grew, and within a few years it had a population of over 100 people. In 1839, the town's first school was built, and within five years it had also becomeing a successful business. By 1861, Wood River had reached its peak as an agricultural community with over 500 residents. However, during the American Civil War, Wood River saw heavy fighting and damage to its infrastructure. After the war, many residents left for various reasons, but some stayed to rebuild. In 1920, Wood River became an incorporated village under the name of Riverside. Over time, Riverside expanded its services and annexed additional areas until it eventually included all of what is now known as Park County – including the towns of Beloit and La Crosse – making Wood River one of the most heavily populated villages in Illinois. Today, Wood River remains an agriculturally-based community with a strong social fabric that helps support local businesses and churches. The town also features several nice neighborhoods that are safe to live in regardless of your income level or ethnicity – something that is rare in today's society. Overall, I believe that wood river is an excellent exampleof how community can help support businesses and improve qualityof life for everyone involved; something which I hope will continue to be common throughout Park County!
The first permanent settlers in what is now Wood River, Illinois were the Shawnees. The first white man to set foot on the land that would become Wood River was James Stephenson in 1804. Stephenson built a cabin on the bank of the river and named it after himself, Stephenson's Rapids. The town of Stephenson was founded by him and other pioneers in 1809. In 1812, Stephenson married Mary McGowan and their children were born here. By 1850, there were over 180 people living in Stephenson. The town declined during the American Civil War because so many men left for military duty. It recovered after the war but lost its status as a center of commerce when railroads came through. In 1872, Henry Wagoner settled down at the mouth of the river and named it “Wagoner’s Point” in honor of his father-in-law, General George Hurlbut. Wagoner had been captain general of Union troops during the Civil War and he donated lands to build a school and post office here. In 1898, Wagoner sold his interest in wagoners point to John Dickey who renamed it “Dickey’s Landing” after himselfldred years earlier (1824). Dickey operated a ferry across the river until 1915 when he sold it to Jens Nielsen who added an ice cream truck onto his property for services along with gasoline storage tanks on site! During World War II, much effort went into creating an artificial harbor on shore opposite Dickey’s Landing which became known as Terminal Island due to its importance for shipping fuel supplies into Lake Michigan from wooded areas inland
