Wood River, Illinois is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 8,031 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. Wood River is located on the border of McLean and neighboring counties and has a large open-air market that seats over 1,000 people. There are also several shops and restaurants in town. The name "Wood River" originated from a stream running through the town. When settlers first came to this area they named the stream after some trees on their property that were cut down for lumber. The name was shortened to "WoodRiver" because it sounded more like other places with similar names such as "Wabash". In 1843, General James Kansa sent his army into this area to help drive out Native Americans who had been living here for many years previous. After weeks of fighting Kansa's army discovered that there were no Indian villages in this area so he retreats back upriver towards Springfield instead of continuing further into McLean County which would have been much more difficult to attack than going all the way through Wood River. In 1870, Wabash Railroad built a line through town from Sycamore Junction to DeKalb County which made it easier for people to get around without having to go all the way out to Springfield. This railroad also supported agriculture by helping farmers deliver food products directly to consumers across the county lines. As time went on different businesses cropped up along with various manufacturing companies until finally brickyards and garment factories opened up in WoodRiver during World War II (although most production ceased shortly thereafter due to war-time restrictions). After the war ended many residents moved away but some stayed until recently when new homes were built along Main Street east of Interstate 45 near downtown (the old Schoolhouse building still stands today as one of those homes). Today WoodRiver features several small businesses including two convenience stores as well as several farm fields where people can gather fresh produce or purchase items such as eggs or milk while also browsing local merchants’ shelves stocked with items such as clothing, kitchen supplies, toys and seasonal decorations

The history of Wood River, Illinois goes back to the early 1800s. The community was founded by a group of pioneers in 1816, and slowly grew over the years. In 1853, the town was renamed for General George B. McClellan after he served as an advisor to President Franklin D. Roosevelt during World War II. The population of Wood River increased rapidly throughout the late 1800s and into the 1900s, reaching a peak in 1910 with around 2,000 residents. However, due to factors such as prohibition and natural disasters, the population decreased steadily until it peaked in 1930 at just under 4,000 residents. In recent decades, however, Wood River has seen some modest growth which has led to a population of around 10-12 thousand residents today. The town is located in Kane County on the east bank of the Chicago River between Jordan Park and Cicero Heights. It is bordered by Henderson Township on the north side and Rookwood Township on the south side. The total area is about 110 acres and its ZIP Code is 60622. The community began as a small farming village known only for its cotton fields and swamps dating back to 1816 when pioneer Jacob Beiler erected a cabin within sight of present day Main Street (then called Indianacross). Over time various other barns were built including one that still stands today inside Main Street’s eastern boundary wall- this particular barn was part of what became known as “Beiler’s Barn” after early resident Jacob Beiler’s son who also operated it during his father’s lifetime (1824-1902). In 1853 – following President Franklin D Roosevelt's recommendation – General George B McClellan donated land near present day McCormick Place in Chicago for what would become Wood River Village which had been established as an agricultural center with cotton production being its mainstay; this major donation helpedstimulate industrial development adjacent to what would become one of Chicago's most important cultural centers for African Americans . By 1910 there already existed 2 banks within walking distance: First National Bank & Trust Company on State street frontage west of Main Street where many blacksmith shops were located outputting knives/hammered goods; Second National Bank across from current day Wrigley Field had opened soon afterwards - considered proto- suburban developments . Cotton ginners continued operating outbuildings until well into later decades while other businesses included mercantile stores (grocery store etc.), barber shops (face cream), doctor offices (midwifery), printing presses (newspapers) & several breweries which produced hard liquor like Belmont beer & Lagerfeld wine products before Prohibition ended these operations effectively limiting alcohol sales statewide ; post office remained open despite high rates charged by competing mail service providers thru wire services consequent To large number Of joblessness resultant From booze ban . Population 1925 census estimated at 1410 +/- ; 1970 census estimate at 1000 +/-
In 1847, the Illinois General Assembly authorized the construction of a road from St. Clair County, Indiana to Terre Haute, Indiana. The road was named Wood River Road and it became an important transportation artery for farmers and people in the area. In 1915, the Illinois State Legislature created a park on the banks of Wood River to commemorate that history and also to promote recreational activity in the area.
