Wood River is a town in Putnam County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,594 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1837 by Captain James K. Polk and his family. It is named for the wooded area around it. Wood River is located in the northwest corner of Illinois. The first settlers in what would become Wood River were Captain James K. Polk and his family who arrived in 1837 from Kentucky as part of the Great Western migration. They moved to a farm on the now abandoned village of White Sands which they named after their home state of Kentucky (White Sands had been platted by an Englishman). In 1840, they built a cabin near where modern day Interstate 80 crosses the river and called it "Old Plantation". In 1846, they bought land east of their original cabin and developed what would become known as "The Village" into a small town with five stores, one blacksmith shop, two churches, three schools (one public and two private), two hotels (the Log Cabin Hotel and the Post Office Hotel), several homes (some still standing today), water tower/pump house/power plant (built between 1898-1900), ball park with outfield dimensions that could accommodate up to twenty playersand two large breweries; all this while living off farming income which supplemented their meager government pay! By 1860 there were over fifty residents living within six miles of Old Plantation while also serving as tax collectors for Putnam County! One Hundred years later there are only ten residents left within that six mile radius!!! much like our own community today!
