During his time as Secretary at War, Grant played a critical role in developing modern tactics for warfare such as using artillery shell trains to bombard targets behind enemy lines and using photography to map battlefield locations

Wood River is a town in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,611 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Wood River was laid out in 1827 by Captain William Hull and his associates as a fur-trading post on the Raccoon Creek branch of the Chicago River. In 1845, Colonel James Kossuth arrived in Wood River with 1,500 men to help open up new land for settlement in what is now Cook County. In 1865, General John McClernand's forces captured Wood River during the American Civil War and it became part of Union Territory No. 2. The first store opened in WoodRiver in 1827 by Captain William Hull and his associates as a fur-trading post on the Raccoon Creek branch of the Chicago River
The Wood River was a natural stream that ran through the counties of Kane, Winnebago, and Will County in Illinois. The river formed near the city of Chicago and flowed southeast before turning north and flowing into Lake Michigan. The name "Wood River" is derived from the word "Wabash," which is an Indian name for this particular stream. The first Europeans to visit the area were French traders who traveled along the then-navigated Illinois River in search of new trade opportunities. In 1814, Captain George Peake sailed downriver from St. Louis and anchored at what is now Lockport on the now-defunct Wabash Canal. He took advantage of a favorable moment in the tide's direction to cross overland to land on the other side of the current day's Chicago Bridge at what is now Midtown Center. In 1818, General William Henry Harrison explored this part of Northwestern Illinois while serving as Commander-in-Chief in India under Lieutenant Governor John Pemberton. While on his trip, he discovered a route upriver to Duluth that bypassed Prairie du Chien (now Wisconsin) and allowed easy access to resources like fur seals and Sturgeon Pointe Island which lay beyond modern day Green Bay, WI. This discovery led Harrison to change course southward towards Milwaukee instead of eastward towards Duluth as planned, opening up much new land for settlement within contemporary Cook County! Later that year, James Krieger organized what would become one of America's first wagon train routes when he set out from Council Bluffs via Rockford with more than 120 settlers aboard his ill-fated Mayflower Expedition in July 1823! As early as 1800, farmers in central Illinois were farming areas with valuable water supplies at their disposal such as Crystal Lake (now Fox Valley), Clear Creek (now Arlington Heights), White Cloud Lake (now Hubbard City), White Earth Creek (now Westville), Monee River (now Geneva), Ottawa Stream (later known as Willow Creek), Shiloh Creek (later known as Decatur Street/Euclid Avenue), likely due to its proximity to Chicago’s iron ore mines!
