Wood River is a small town in Decatur County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Wood River was James Sutter. He and his family arrived on July 4, 1814 on the "Pioneer" from California. Sutter founded Sutter's Fort on the site of present-day Decatur after being refused passage by the rest of America on its trip to explore California for gold. In 1836, he donated land to establish a village on the river after realizing that other settlers would not want to build near him because of his wealth and position as an officer in the U.S. Army under General Phillip Sheridan. The name was changed from Sutter's Fort Village to Wood River Village in honor of Colonel John Hays (1795-1868), who had donated $10,000 for its construction and designed it himself with help from local architects Amos Stowell and Jeremiah Dixon Jr.. In 1838, George Stephenson built a steamboat called "Illinois" at which point residents started trading goods downstream along the river for lumber they received upstream in shipments coming downriver from Lake Michigan via barges or Native American traders known as wampum belts because no one could be sure how long each batch would last before running out of wood. By 1840, there were about 100 people living in Wood River Village; by 1850 it had grown to nearly 400 people with over 20 businesses including a millinery shop, saddlery store, grocery store and flour mill). Wood River is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was named for the wooded area near its location on the now-demolished riverbank where pioneer settlers established their homes in 1837. The first post office and store were both opened in 1839 by Capt. Fenton and his wife Sarah Bruce; they were among the early settlers in what would become Wood River. In 1861, John Harington donated land to form a school district that included Wood River; it was first known as Harnett School District No. 2. In 1923, the village of WoodRiver merged with nearby rural farming village of Poultney to form an all-new city government under Mayor Harry Sutherlin of Springfield; this merger changed the name of Wood River from "Poultney" to "Wood River". The new city limits stretched from West Side Road (now Gatewood Avenue) east to White Sands Boulevard (now Centerville Road). At its peak population in 1950, WoodRiver had a total population of 24 people living on over square miles (72 square kilometers). By 1990, however, there only remained six residents within city limits while Elmhurst Township annexed much of what is now Springfield; as a result of these changes in demographics and resulting growth outside city boundaries since then – including recent annexations by Elmhurst Township – WoodRiver's population has shrunken slightly past 1,800 people according to 2016 estimates.
