Wood River is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,137 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1837 by George Stephenson and named for the wooded valley that lay to its east. In 1857, Stephenson donated land to the town for a public school and log cabin as its first meeting place. The first store opened in 1861. By 1870, Wood River had a post office, two schools (one private), three churches (one Methodist, one Baptist), and twenty-seven businesses including four banks and eleven stores. The first railroad reached Wood River in 1872. In 1893, the city of Chicago annexed most of Kane County and when Wood River incorporation took effect on January 1st of that year it became one of the few towns within Chicago without anyMayor or City Councilman representing it since incorporation had been voluntary until then with all decisions made by residents through their elected representatives via petition or referendum passed by majority vote regardless of who lived within village boundaries at that time due to no legal right to do so given Village voters' lack of representation in Town Hall having only 3 members out of over 600 total voting members). In 1907, the community changed its name to Plainfield after Orson Scott Carden, an American statesman who served as United States Secretary of State under President James K. Polk.
