The town was founded in 1855 by James Wills and his family from Kentucky as a stop on therailroad between Chicago and Evansville. In 1871, Wood River became a separate village when it merged with two other towns, Pella and North Moline, to form the Quad Cities metropolitan area. The town's name comes from its location near the confluence of the rivers White (north) and Black (south). The first settler in Wood River was James Wills, who arrived in 1855 from Kentucky with his family. In 1870, he founded another small community, Pella, just south of Wood River on what is now State Route 362. That year also saw the founding of North Moline by John Hargrave and George Stephenson; together they created what is now one of America's most important trucking towns—the only major urban center within 15 miles (24 km) of all four branches of Interstate 80! In 1907, after years of planning and construction by local leaders—most notably brothers Cyrus Eaton and Hiram Eaton—Wood River became one of America's newest cities! With over 100 businesses and more than 21 thousand residents, it was one of Quad Cities' fastest-growing areas during that decade! By 1990 Woods had declined somewhat relative to its surrounding suburbs but still boasted an active downtown core filled with retail stores, restaurants/bars/breweries/nightlife venues., schools (including an Iowaschool), health care facilities (including a hospital), law enforcement services (including a sheriff’s department), as well as several dozen churches serviceable for both locals & visitors! Today there are no less than 16 professional sports teams playing in various leagues across three states inside their city limits: 1st Brigade Combat Team (Upper Midwest Command)—the Army’s largest armored brigade on earth; 2nd Battalion Commander Infantry Regiment(of) 9th Infantry Division “Stryker”; 3rd Armored Cavalry Division “Airmobile” outposts located at Pizza Hut Arena (& adjacent Business District); 4-time defending champion Menominee County Lumberjacks men’s ice hockey team playing home games at FirstEnergy Stadium since 2003 (!); along with numerous government agencies including 6 fire departments*, 1 police department*,3 jail cells*,1 ambulance*….*) These days WoodRiver residents have access to everything their neighboring communities have access to PLUS many more products & services not found anywhere else nearby: cable TV (*=$25 per month + $5 per month extra for HBO or Showtime Watching), high-speed internet ($50/month + $10 per month extra for Netflix streaming), parks & Playgrounds (& bike trails!), etc….* As if all this weren't enough….in 2012* WoodRiver annexed adjoining unincorporated territory making it 3 times as large as ever before!]
The area that is now Wood River was originally part of the Potawatomi Nation. The first European to visit this region was French explorer Jacques Marquette in 1679. He named the river after his discovery, the Wood River at Michigan. In 1814, United States General James K. Polk sent a force of soldiers to explore and claim what are now Illinois and Wisconsin for the United States. On July 8, 1818, Ulysses S. Grant named the river after him in commemoration of his victory over Napoleon at Gettysburg.
