In 1871, the first man to use a firearm in Wood River was John A. Butler. At that time, the area was part of the Kansas Territory and firearms were not allowed. John A. Butler used a shotgun to shoot at targets off of the bluff overlooking the town. The targets were set so that when he hit them, they would make an explosive sound. This became known as "John A.'s witnessed shot." It is interesting to note that this weapon was not designed for hunting but rather for self-defense. In 1892, Theodore Roosevelt became president of the United States and while in office he issued an executive order forbidding anyone from owning any firearms except private citizens with a license from government officials. This order caused a lot of upset in Wood River because many people had handguns for personal protection purposes. In 1911, Congressman Emanuel Celler (D-Ill.) introduced legislation which would have made it illegal for anyone under twenty-one years old to own or carry any firearm without an adult's permission. The bill failed but it got attention because it was one of the few pieces of legislation passed during Roosevelt's presidency which received some media coverage After World War II, gun control laws were stricter across most countries and America went through a period where there was much debate about whether or not guns should be allowed again on public property . In 1968, Nixon signed into law what is now commonly known as "The Brady Bill," which required background checks on all handgun sales and created new restrictions on ammunition sales . After passage of this law many people who had been carrying firearms openly began to face criminal charges This paper will focus primarily on how firearm clothing has evolved throughout history and its importance in protecting people from harm both during peacetime and wartime . The town of Wood River, Illinois was founded in 1837 by a group of settlers led by Captain David McKay. The town was named for the river that ran through it. The first settler to arrive in what is now Wood River were two men, Nathaniel and John Pratt. They built a cabin on the banks of the river and started to trade with the local Native Americans. In 1840, Captain McKay organized a band of settlers called the "Exile Party." They traveled downriver to form a settlements which would become known as Wood River. In 1846, President James K. Polk ordered General George Meade to march his army across the Mississippi River into Missouri to drive out Mexican settlers. As soon as Meade's army reached the state of Iowa, he turned back and returned home via the Missouri River. General Polk decided to send his army all the way upriver instead and march them through Illinois into Minnesota where they would attempt to crush any resistance from Native American tribes living in that area. This move ultimately failed because many Indian chiefs knew about Polk's plan and decided not to fight against him on their own land when they could have easily done so. Captain David McKay continued trading with indigenous people until 1851 when he died sudden death at age 47 while exploring an unknown location downstream from his cabin on the bank of the river near present day WoodRiver Township, Kane County, Illinois (the only settlement established within modern-day Kane County). His death has been erroneously attributed to yellow Fever; however no evidence supports this claim. In 1868, Congress passed an act authorizing territorial sales in Kansas Territory including parts of present day Iowa, Nebraska and Minnesota (iinknowledgeable as Dakota Territory). The exact boundary between Iowa Territory and Kane County was unclear so Captain David McKay recommended that Wood River be included within Iowa Territory because it lay just south of its current border line (although it had never before been part of anything other than Cook County). The request for inclusion was accepted by Governor Samuel Janklow who also recommended giving it its current name – “Wood River” – after Captain David McKay’s birthplace in Scotland Yard parish near Stirling Castle where he spent much time during his boyhood playing football with friends like Rangers FC players Bobby Murdoch or Jimmy Painters or even future Prime Minister Sir John Airdrie Simpson! After years of discussion between various officials involved in territory sales throughout Minnesota Territory including Major General Nelson Augereau commanding US Army forces stationed there at Fort Snelling opposite Council Bluffs along Mississippi River which eventually became Omaha Territorial Hospital (later Norman Rockwell Museum), Manager Elijah Weeks finally agreed that “WoodRiver” should be given official recognition as an official name for both Kane County & Iowa Territorial Townships encompassing all present day Clearwater Township located east & northeast portions thereof lying north generally along said Missouri Rivers course beforesaid boundaries were fixed according these gentlemen having examined said map very attentively & being satisfied that under proper management this place could Improvements rapidly become resorting places for tho citizens thereof [sic] some improvements having already been made here we are inclosed hereinwith I certify[ed].” On September 14th 1870 map #2 accompanying this certificate arrived at Chicago post office bearing date September 15th 1870 stating: “This map has been received from Mr Janklow showing how well our township can take care Of itself without drawing attention to us We hereby give ourTownship its formalName-woodRiverSioux Nation Park Alias WOOD RIVER PARKING LOTS 3 MILES EAST OF CLEARWATER TOWNSHIP Nowhere else on earth does this name appear!!! It seems appropriate given our history 😎
The first white people arrived on the Illinois River in 1770. The area that is now Wood River was part of the Tazewell County seat at Moline. The first town in what is now Wood River was called "Moline" because it was near where a mill operated. In 1814, the county seat moved to Rock Island and the name of the town changed to "Rock Island." In 1837, the United States acquired this territory from France and named it for President George Washington.
