By 1900, there were more than 10 million people living in Chicago alone; by 1920 that number had increased to 25 million people. As demand for lumber grew even Greater Chicago needed more water sources to produce mills that could turn out finished products such as brickbats or shoeshine boards using waterpower generated by steam engines or electric turbines. One such mill became known as "the Big Three" -- Cottage Mills (now White Flint), Paper Mill No. 2 (now Hinsdale), and Armour & Company's Old Local No.?1 (built 1847). In 1911, when Colonel George Washington Cullum bought 1/3 interest in Armour & Company's Old Local No.?1 from its original builder – George Armstrong Cottage – he rechristened it "Walden Pond." The name stuck until 1922 when Armour & Company merged with another business partner properties into a new giant called Kruger National Corporation which kept Walden Pond name but changed all company signage including company colors from green and white to black and gold! With so much corporate activity going on at one time it seemed like nothing could keep up with growth – until World War II! During World War II Walden Pond prospered once again generating electricity for businesses along with manufacturing munitions used by America’s war effort including aircraft carriers USS Constitution (CV-4)and USS Saratoga (CV-6)and warships battleships Arkansas Projectiles(BB-57), Oklahoma City Newsreel(KLF-2), Bethlehem Steel Corp.(Palladium plant #5), General Electric Co.(ELECTRICITY Plant #1), Midland Steel Corp.(Plant #5A)& Stonington Iron Works Inc.(steel plant #8)! Unfortunately not everything went according to plan however due to several dams being built across the Little Rock River this forced THE WOOD RIVER FALLS formerly part of IL but now WIRE FOREST PARK Geo area 4 miles wide near where I lived my entire life also reducing watershed volume making me one fourth minority owner of landline phone service!!!
