The first churches were built here in 1837 by Methodists led by Reverend John Atherton as part of his work to evangelize Indian nations across these United States. This was also when Christianity began to spread among these people who had been practicing Buddhism for many centuries before that. The first white settler in what is now Wood River, Illinois was Nicholas H. Kapp in 1818. It was only after the American Civil War that settlers began to arrive and build homes on the banks of the river. By 1870, there were over 100 people living in Wood River. The town started as a small town with just 12 residents, but it grew rapidly thanks to its location at the mouth of the woodedriver and its access to education and commerce. In 1907, Wood River became a city when it merged with neighboring township of Burlington.
