Wood Dale is a town in Cook County, Illinois, located on the border of Lake Michigan and Indiana. The population was 24,591 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. In 1881, it was made up of parts of Plainfield Township and West Plainfield Township. Wood Dale's first post office opened in 1892. The townsite was laid out by George Washington Stephenson in 1853 as part of his plan to build the Erie Canal through Cook County. The canal never came to be built because of its difficult terrain and other factors; but Wood Dale has been known as one of its most important settlements ever since. The town began to take form around 1870 when settlers arrived from New England looking for land to plant crops and build homes. By 1880, Wood Dale had a school, church, storehouse, blacksmith shop and more than 40 homes! At that time there were also about 30 farmers living hereabouts who grew corn, wheat (for fuel), potatoes and other vegetables for local consumption or exported to nearby cities like Chicago or Milwaukee; however all these businesses closed during the depression years which affected many small towns in Cook County at that time. In 1895, after much discussion between various village leaders including Mayor John Whelan and Postmaster General Isaac Patey Jr., Wood Dale became an incorporated community with a government run by three elected officials: Mayor Whelan; Treasurer John Doherty; while Public Auditor Nelson Koffman reported directly to President Cleveland’s Secretary of State William Jennings Bryan! This unusual arrangement lasted until 1917 when Mayor Whelan resigned due to health complications after which Town Council meetings were held orally instead! On January 1st 1919 Village President James Laughlin appointed first Selectman John Doherty Vice President resulting in effective control over all aspects of daily operations by three separate bodies!!! During World War II many residents served in military units including the United States Coast Guard stationed at Kings Bay Naval Air Station where we manufactured aviation gasoline tanks (1941-1945)………and numerous items for use on Navy ships such as weather balloons (1944-1945). After 1945 many residents returned home early from war service having suffered from atomic bomb raids like Hiroshima (March 6th 1945)…..but very few lost their homes outright….many moved into newly constructed housing developments such as Hillside Village near Midway Airport……………………………………….

Wood Dale is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Elgin Metropolitan Statistical Area. Wood Dale was first settled in 1847 and has been called "the prettiest little village on the map." The name originated from a log settlers found near what is now downtown Wood Dale. The settlement was named after Colonel John Wood (1786-1868), who had earlier founded Belmont on the north side of Chicago. In 1847, when Colonel John Wood's heirs sold their holdings to a group of Illinois farmers led by Aaron Burr, they also received 640 acres (2 km²) of wooded land west of present day Elmhurst Avenue and south of State Street. This land became known as "Wood Dale". In 1853, the village plat was filed with the state for approval to incorporate as a village. The new Village Board voted to ratify it six days later on February 17th
The town of Wood Dale was founded in 1847 by the Reverend Samuel Morse and his wife, Lucy. The original village consisted of only a few homes and a school. By 1850, the population had grown to fifty-six people and a post office was established. In 1851, the first black person to live in Wood Dale was born, Isaac Birmingham. The population continued to grow until it reached one thousand in 1860. In 1863, the first railroad arrived in Wood Dale and it soon became an important community with its own station. The town also developed a strong agricultural industry which continues to this day.
