Wood Dale is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,948 at the 2000 census. The town rapidly grew, and by 1872 it had reached its present size. The old sawmill which stood near the mouth of the Des Plaines River until 1954 still produces lumber products such as boards and door handles. A contemporary woodworker's shop was built in 1978 adjacent to an old gas station/convenience store which has since been converted into apartments. Today Wood Dale is home to many businesses including: three grocery stores (Albertson's, Kroger, Pavillion), two banks (First National Bank and Wells Fargo), four restaurants (Brunswick Inn & Brewery, Golden Corral Tex-Mex Grill, Pabst Blue Ribbon Cafe), two health clubs (Mitchell Park Recreation Center and Wood Dale Golf Course), six churches (Church Of God And Christ Presbyterian Church - current church building replaced 1908 structure) and two schools - Elmhurst Elementary School serving grades kindergarten through eighth grade and Highland Heights Middle School serving ninth through twelfth grade along with high school for boys which opened in 2002. 1 million square feet has been developed over past 20 years or so making this once small town one giant hub with more than just retail outlets now scattered throughout its boundaries It should come as no surprise then that there are plenty of things to do if you're looking for something out-of-the-ordinary when visiting Wood Dale! The history of Wood Dale, Illinois begins with the first white people to set foot on the present-day site in 1803. The area that is now Wood Dale was part of the Shawnee Nation and was used as a hunting ground by the tribe. One account says that four men, led by a man named DeWitt Clinton, traveled through this region in search of land to claim for the United States. They found what they were looking for and settled there. In 1836, John Stephenson purchased 640 acres of land from DeWitt Clinton for $4 per acre. This land would later be known as Stephenson’s Millsite. In 1837, Stephenson began to build his mill on this mill site. The mill started production in 1840 and would continue to do so until it closed in 1907. It is interesting to note that Stephenson never married and his mill remains one of the most notable landmarks in Wood Dale’s history. During World War II, much effort went into creating a munitions plant at Wood Dale which ultimately produced weapons for America’s allies. After the war ended, many workers left Wood Dale and its mills behind because the economy had changed so dramatically since World War I. However, some members of the community started back up these mills once again after they discovered how efficient they could be run using modern technology. Today, wooddale is home to several large businesses including MetLife who manufactures insurance products; Arch Coal which drilled coal seam gas wells near Wood Dale; along with other small businesses making their way up throughthe local economy like Weiser Cheese Company which produces cheese made from casein (a milk derivative) and cream; among others One aspect of life that has not changed much over time is public education here at Wood Dale High School which offers classes throughout grades 9-12 . With nearly 200 students enrolled in various disciplines including art, business administration, English language arts/literature/, science/math/, social studies/history/, health/fitness/, music/dance/, digital media programming/web design/,Wooddale will remain one of America’s top high schools for many years to come!
The village of Wood Dale was founded in 1871 by Hon. Augustus Holmes Dawson and his wife, Eliza Jane. The original town plat included a square miles of land on the banks of the Illinois River. The first post office was opened in 1872. The population of Wood Dale reached 100 people in 1881, but declined to 50 by 1893 because of the Panic of 1893. In 1900, a new dam was built across the river and wooddale became an agricultural community with a small millinery industry. In 1916, the US Supreme Court ruled that women could vote in local elections, which helped increase voter turnout for Wood Dale Village Board members. The village also started a library system in 1918 and soon had a high school, two stores, and two churches. In 1930, the US Steel Corporation moved its manufacturing plant from Garysburg to Rockford to take advantage of cheap steel prices in Illinois; this caused significant job loss for many residents of Wood Dale Village during the Depression years. By 1941, only 2% of the population still lived within walking distance of their church or store. However, due to World War II shortages of goods and housing developments being built outside downtown Rockford at that time (the “new” Rockford), much more than half Wood Dale’s population came from outside its boundaries during wartime years when jobs were available within commuting distance only at very low wages as opposed to what they would have received if living within city limits where wages were higher.[2] When war ended officially in 1945 there were problems leftover from World War II like racism against Black Americans who had been displaced as well as other veterans who needed housing and jobs but weren't given them either because they were considered "not American". This caused some tension between black Americans who wanted integration into society while white Americans felt sorry for these formerly displaced groups but didn't want any changes taking place that would integrate those groups into society which they considered undesirable - effectively continuing segregated communities until after desegregation occurred through legislation such as Brown v Boardwalk Properties Co., 422 U S 559 (1975).
