Wood Dale is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. Wood Dale was founded in 1836 by Nicholas Wigglesworth. It became a city on November 3, 1955. The current mayor is Lisa Madigan and the City Council is made up of 7 members. The first residents of what would become Wood Dale were Isaac and Rebecca Barnes who settled on a farm near present-day North Avenue and Foster Road in 1836. They brought with them cows, pigs, chickens, cornmeal for bread (a rarity then), butter and milk from their home country of England. A public school was built soon afterward which served the town until 1957 when it merged into Loyola Chicago High School District No. 4 In 1853 Abraham Lincoln gave his famous speech "A Better Life for All" in which he called for an end to slavery in America This event helped spur development within Wood Dale as abolitionism spread throughout the United States during this time period In 1870 John Stephenson donated land to make way for what would become the present day park located across South Boulevard from Holy Name Catholic Church . The park opened to the public on April 20th, 1893 The original name given to it was "South Park", but due to objections from some locals it was changed to "Wood Dale" after approval by Mayor James Jealousy on May 6th of that year

In 1871, the area that is now Wood Dale was part of the township of Skokie, Illinois. In 1877, the township was merged into the village of West Chicago. In 1916, West Chicago was annexed by Chicago and Wood Dale became a part of the new city. The village had a population of 4,000 in 1940. The population increased to 24,000 by 1960 and 38,000 by 1970. The population has since decreased to 15,000 as of 2000. Wood Dale is one of the few villages in Cook County that does not have any incorporated businesses or housing developments. It is also one of only a handful villages in Illinois without an airport or shopping plaza. It began as a small farming community with about 100 residents in 1871 when Abraham Lincoln's wife Mary moved from her home in Holland to become resident at what is now Wilson Road and Elmwood Avenue (now southbound I-294). She soon married local farmer John Prentice and they moved out west to move their family farmstead to what is now east side Street (northbound I-294) on land donated by Prentice's brother Amos Fisk (1821-1920). They named their new community "Wood Dale" after John's father who had died young while serving in the Mexican War. Across from where they lived there were several other small farms until 1830 when George Washington Larimer built his large sawmill on current day State Road #2 just northeast of town center (southwest corner First Street & north edge Clark Boulevard). With over 12 miles of logs piled up along its wharf for shipment downriver it quickly became one of the largest lumber mills in America - handling 700 barrels per day beforeacycle! Unfortunately this mill closed around 1860 due à lack business opportunities plus wood burning engines becoming more common; Hence continued decline for much time until being reborn about 1980 with modernized milling processes including high speed counterbalance machines which power sawmills today! By 1870 census counted 158 people living here – all farmers/loggers except 5 men working for some other business/ profession: 11 clergymen (& 1 woman), 26 farmers ($75 per year), 6 carpenters (& 3 women), 3 druggists (& 2 women), 1 tailor(& 2 men) ...probably all self-employed like most early 19th century villagers...and all poor! No paved streets then but dirt roads with up to 8 feet deep gutters everywhere due flooding during bad weather events such as severe thunderstorms or snowpocalypses which would shut down entire communities for days! However things have slowly improved since then with permanent street paving starting around 1990...just enough improvement so Wood Dale can participate fully & proudlyin 21st century American society!
