The town of Wood Dale, Illinois, was founded in 1871 by John and Sarah Kapp. The first store in the town was a blacksmith shop. Wood Dale is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,070 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Wood Dale is located in the northwest corner of Cook County and straddles the border of Lake Michigan to the east. The first occupants of what would become Wood Dale were French Canadian settlers who arrived in 1837. The town was named for General James Siskind and his wife, Catharine Woodford Siskind. Colonel George Armstrong Custer's regiment stopped at Grand River on its way from Fort Dearborn to Little Rock before continuing on to Kansas City; one colonel and over 100 men were killed or captured while crossing that river. In 1871, local farmers formed a society to purchase 640 acres (225 ha) of land southeast of present-day Wood Dale on which they built a large gristmill and sawmill adjacent to their homes. That year also marked the start of an agricultural dynasty that continues to this day: The Armour family managed both mills until 1954 when it merged with Krupp AG's Chicago mill division to form Procter & Gamble Co.; Armours remain owners and operators of both mills until today (see below). The transformation from rural farming into industrial production began in earnest with construction of a branch line railroad from Decatur Junction northward in 1881; this route served as an important connection between Chicago and Northwestern Railroad tracks running through northwestern Cook County. At first only coal was raised here but by 1907 wood had become more important as well, thanks largely to progress made during World War I with new technology developments – such as gas turbines – that allowed for lumber production remote from Cities where transportation could be improved vastly without detracting significantly from quality or quantity... Today much wood products are produced here including furniture, appliances, cars etc., allocating significant amounts back into rural communities throughout America due both jobs and economic development... This led to more business opportunities for the town and helped to increase its population by 150 people by 1870. During World War II, many local residents served in the military and as a result, Wood Dale became one of the most heavily bombed towns in Illinois. However, despite this hard hit condition, the town continued to thrive and went on to become one ofthe most popular small towns within Illinois due to its laid-back atmosphere and great community spirit.
