In 1871, the town of Wood Dale was organized from a part of Skokie, Illinois. The first postmaster was A.F. Herrick and the first store was built on the corner of State and Prairie Streets by Wm. Hickey in 1872. In 1875, the town had a population of about 150 people and owned one hotel, two sawmills, four farms, four blacksmiths, three grist mills and five schools. The Panic of 1893 destroyed much local business activity and caused many residents to move away or emigrate. However, some businesses such as Wm. Hickey's grocery Store still continued to operate until 1925 when it closed its doors for good because of credit card debts owed to customers by its parent company J & P Herrick Manufacturing Company which went bankrupt during the Great Depression
