Winnetka, Illinois is a historic town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 34,736 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Winnetka was incorporated as a village in 1872 and became a city in 1959. The name originated from "Winnipeg", Manitoba, Canada. The first white settlers in Winnetka were prospectors exploring for coal and other minerals in what is now the northwest suburbs of Chicago. When they found rich shale beds near the current site of Winnetka Village, they decided to settle there and named their new town after their discovery -WINNETKA (pronounced "win-nuh-taka"). They built small log homes on land that still stands today; most of these survive as evidence of early wineries and vineyards leased out to tenant farmers during the 19th century. By 1870, WINNETKA had become an important manufacturing center with breweries such as Miller Brewing Company and Harpsichord Brewery producing beer for local consumption and export to Europe. In 1909, WINNETKA CITY LIGHTS were put up across both downtown streets to show off new developments including movie theaters (the Riviera Theater), department stores (Marshall Field's), banks (First National Bank), post office (Chicago Board of Trade), amusement park ("Witney Park"), golf course (Lake Michigan Golf Course), tennis courts (Thornbrook Country Club) - all designed by architect George Hargrave Gibbs Jr.. In 1925, WINNETKA became one of only two cities in Cook County with its own police department when it merged with neighboring Oak Lawn Township; today it continues to operate under its own police chief name but joint jurisdiction between both agencies remains unchanged. The city's significance continued through World War II when much of the industrial production took place elsewhere due to wartime restrictions on manufactures; however, Winnetka did see some growth as war refugees began arriving during this time period including many Jews who established themselves in various businesses around town before moving onto larger commercial surroundings northward into Evanston or southward into Westchester County where they eventually established theirown communities such as Skokie or Lake Zurich. According to some estimates up until 1970 approximately 80% of winetakers living within city limits worked within one business - mainly wineries which accounted for over 60% of all barrels produced throughout the entire City during that time frame! After years of steady decline starting in the late 1960s due primarily to suburbanization among many residents followed by increasing costs associated with service increases along with generally poor economic times overall since then things have begun to turnaround somewhat although cost overruns continue particularly along I-94 corridor leading into downtown which has been characterized as being increasingly unaffordable for many residents especially those making below poverty line incomes .. With nearly $1Billion dollars invested nationally & locally alone by 2018 alone[], it’s clear that we are seeing signs that WINNETKA may yet be reborn – again!
Winnetka was first settled by the Winnetka Band of Indians in 1795. The town was founded on a small piece of land that is now part of Winnetka Heights. In 1847, the town was renamed after General George Washington, Commander-in-Chief of the United States Army during the Mexican War. In 1916, Winnetka became a city and its boundaries expanded to include parts of Glencoe and Addison.
