The town of Winnetka was founded by JohnWinnetka in 1795 as part of the nearby township of Northampton. At first, it consisted only of his own household and some land around his storehouse and barns on Deerpath Road today's north side of State Route 9 just east of Old Orchard Road (then Deerpath Road). However, over time other settlers joined him including Isaac Watts who built another house on what is now Wickham Avenue near where Waukegan High School currently sits; James Stillwell; Ebenezer Scudder; Amos Kendall; Rev. George Weigley (a Dissenting minister from New Bedford); Solomon Streator (the founder of Streator College); Nicholas-Jacques Lalande (from Quebec) and others until it reached its present size with an population over 1,000 in 1800 when it united with Northampton Township to form the Town of Winnetska."
Winnetka was an incorporated town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It was established on November 3, 1837, as a result of the merger of two other towns: North Winnetka and South Winnetka. The original population of Winnetka was 1,500. The town grew rapidly due to its location at the intersection of two major transportation arteries: the Chicago & Northwestern Railway and the Butterfield Overland Railroad. In 1854, the first post office in Winnetka opened. At that time, it consisted of a single room with a desk and four chairs. By 1865, there were three post offices inWinnetka- two inside the town limits and one outside them. In 1886, Winnetka became part of Park Ridge Township; however, it reverted to its original name once again in 1912 when Park Ridge became part of Wheaton Township.
