Winnetka, Illinois was settled in 1833 by the Winnetka Tribe of Indians. The city was named for Captain John Winnetka, an American Revolutionary War veteran and commander of the first Indianographical Society Expedition. In 1857, the town became a county seat under the new United States Constitution. It remained so until 1868 when it became a city.

The first settler in Winnetka was George Washington Prentice who arrived in 1824 with his family from Portsmouth, Virginia. The settlement grew quickly and by 1840 had a schoolhouse, store and 5 families living there. By 1850, the town had a post office and 3 churches: one Baptist (1851), one Methodist (1853) and one Catholic (1857). On July 24, 1858 the hamlet of Winnetka incorporated as a village under the leadership of Mayor Nicholas Jaffray. It had a population of 164 people. In 1865-66 Civil War veteran Joshua Chamberlain set up an auctioneer's business in Winnetka to help raise money for Lincoln's cause. That same year he organized the first summer picnic on Lake Michigan shoreline near present day Waukegan which still takes place every August duringThanksgiving weekend to this day. In 1870 Frank Haggerty founded Haggerty Bros., grocery store #1 on Main Street which became one of Illinois' most successful businesses until it merged with Kroger in 1994 In 1902 Alva Edison established his experimental electric light plant here to demonstrate electricity as compared to candles or oil lamps; this demonstration led to Edison developing alternating current power distribution systems across America within 10 years It was also here that architect John Dwight Rice designed the original winnertak dam on Deer Creek while working on DeKalb County courthouse project nearby In 1915 Mabel Dodge Smith became First Lady when her husband Franklin D Roosevelt won election as President that year Winnetka residents supported FDR throughout World War II providing food for soldiers and home-front activities like making munitions using their mills . After President Roosevelt died in 1945 MrsSmith continued support through her children before selling most assets in 1951 . In 1957 local boy Neil Armstrong became first person to walk on moon when he landed #8 White House Rocket Launcher at Edwards AFB outside Los Angeles

Winnetka was founded in 1837 as a small farming community on the banks of the Calumet River. In 1859, Winnetka passed through an act of Congress to become a city and it elected its first mayor in 1861. By 1870, Winnetka had acquired a annexed area including present-day South Elgin and parts of Skokie and Streamwood. On July 1, 1888, Winnetka became one of fifty cities in the state of Illinois by an act of the General Assembly. From 1889 to 1893, Mayor John Paulding led efforts to build the first electric streetcars in America; these cars were known as "The White Horses". In 1912, when Mayor George Hynes took office after winning an election against incumbent William Fahey with 98% majority vote,[2] he ordered all outdoor fires be banned within city limits effective January 1st 1913.[3] This order remains today as one of Winnetka's most famous landmarks - fires are still illegal inside City Hall![4] In 1920s and 1930s Winnetka experienced significant growth due to new technology being brought over from abroad such as airplane travel and refrigeration which made food available throughout much of Illinois at much lower prices than what was available back home. One example was during World War II when local farmers produced crops that were able to resist British bombing raids – this helped makeWinnetka one of only a few American cities not destroyed by bombing during World War II
