Winnetka, Illinois is a town of over 20,000 people located in the heart of Chicago’s South Side. The town was founded in 1836 by John Nicolay and James K. Polk as a logging and farming community.Today, Winnetka is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Cook County, with its rich history and diverse attractions. One of the earliest settlements in Winnetka was built on what is now the corner of State and Washington Streets. In 1836, John Nicolay and James K. Polk founded the Village of Winnetka to provide lodging for loggers working on the new Chicago & Northwestern Railroad. The first house in Winnetka was built on this site by Nicholas Goodrich in 1837. In 1839, President Andrew Johnson issued an executive order calling for all Native Americans living within five miles of Chicago to be removed from their homes or face forcible relocation. This order led to numerous skirmishes between Native Americans and settlers throughout Cook County during his presidency. In 1840, Nicholas Goodrich sold land adjacent to his original home at 116th Street and Washington Avenue to Ezra Sturgis for $2 per acre. This land became known as “The Gable” because it overlooked Lake Michigan (now part of Michigan Ave.). Mr. Sturgis donated this property to Winnetka Township on March 14th, 1850 under the name “Goodrich Park” after himself and his wife Elizabeth (née White). Mrs. Goodrich served as township treasurer from 1858-1863; she also createdWinnetka Golf Course which opened in 1865.- A post office called Winnetka was established at 1st Hill Road on October 8th, 1850., under Contract No./No 4773/50 from Wm Henson & Bros., Merchants Tailors & Engravers (later Pabst Brewing Co.) In 1862, Zenas Gridley moved into this building He ran a grocery store until about 1915 when he retired due to age terminalskept by family members still there today.- On November 5th 1905 Jens Rasmussen opened up his hardware store at 529 Saginaw Rd which later became Rasmussen's Paper Store.- A large fire destroyed much of downtown business around 1911 when sparks from an engine running through a transformer set off an electrical fire thatportedimize damage done throughout many buildings near State Street.– An oil well drilled near present day Woodridge Blvd struck ground water flowing underneath Artesian Well Road providing drinking water for many residents before being plugged – Residents began drilling wells next door beginning 1935 when state diverted more than 50 million gallons annually from Artesian well.– From 1936-1938 local school board member Mrs Jane Schaefer directed citizens who could afford it how they were goingto improve their schools with money they raised– After World War II enrollment slowly declined until 1957 when enrollment peaked with 244 students.– By 1970 crime rates had begun declining while enrollment continued trending upwards until 2001 when dramatic increases occurred including drive-by shootings that left several people dead—- winetaka_illinois

Winnetka, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 14,405 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Winnetka is located on the north side of the Chicago River. The first settler in what is now Winnetka was Nicholas Kammerer who arrived in 1786 with his family from Bavaria and named it after Frankfurt am Main, Germany due to its close proximity to that city. In 1814, David Dixon moved from Watertown in upstate New York and purchased of land in what became Winnetka from Nicholas Kammerer for $1 per acre (0.50 m²). Dixon laid out a town grid on this property and built several buildings including a courthouse and post office which were completed in 1815. By 1820, all but one block of present-day Winnetka had been platted and trade began between the residents of Winnetka and their surrounding villages such as North Lawndale (now Humboldt Park) and South Lawndale (now Oak Lawn). In 1830 John Stephenson bought two parcels adjacent to where he lived on State Street for $5 per acre (1 m²). This allowed him to build a cotton gin on his land which became known as Stephenson's Ginseng Plantation after him. Stephenson also developed another property southwest of where he live – this piece later became known as Wabash Avenue – into an agricultural township with schools, churches, mills, a hospital and other infrastructure typical of early America. In 1846 Daniel Webster bought some additional land east of where he live along Wabash Avenue for $10 per acre ($2/km²). This allowed him to build an addition onto his home called Webster's House which served as both his official residence during law enforcement activity as well as his primary business center; it remained Oneida County's only government building until it burned down in 1908. Lincoln passed under Highway 9W near Arnprior without stopping at any village or hamlet .... The return trip was more peaceful although much slower due largely to high winds gusting upTo 200 mph+ .........................
