The first store in Winnetka opened its doors on November 15th, 1855. At that time, the town was only about 10 acres in size. In 1857, Griggs & Company opened a store inside of what is now the Griggs Bank Building on Main Street. That same year saw the opening of the first post office in Winnetka - which doubled as a schoolhouse. In 1861, Loomis & Company established a grocery store on First Avenue - which remain one of the town's main businesses to this day! By 1865, there were already over 20 stores and businesses operating inWinnetka! The late 1800s and early 1900s were difficult for many small towns throughout America due to several factors including increased competition from larger cities; economic instability caused by World War I; increasing population density (which led to more streetcars being needed to move people around); and changing technology (e.g., automobiles). However, Winnetka stood out among these communities during this time period because it remained relatively unchanged despite these challenges - largely due to its strong tradition of agriculture and local manufacturing capabilities. This success story began with Peter Mayhew's decision to establish a small town within hisown farmstead in1855-6...and continued until today! Overwhelmingly thanks to their agricultural output (especially corn), winnetskas have been able to maintain their wealth and prominence over successive generations...despite numerous natural disasters (such as floods and fires)...including both world wars!

Winnetka, Illinois is a town located in Kane County, Illinois. The population was 12,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Winnetka was founded by Major General David Dixon in 1814 and named after his home village of Wissembourg, Germany. The first settler in Winnetka was John Schofield, who built a cabin on the east side of the tracks near what is now Winnetka High School. When Schofield's land was patented to others in 1825, they took up residence on the same site, which became known as Dixontowne. In 1829, Major General David Dixon decided to move his military headquarters from Galena to Winnetka because of its strategic location and access to railroads. He named the new town after himself and appointed John Dix as its first postmaster. The following year, he also donated land for a school district that would serve both Winnetka and neighboring townships. Dixontowne quickly become one of the most popular communities in Kane County due to its easy access to education and convenient transportation options. By 1830, it had reached its peak population with over 1,000 residents living there permanently or transiently. In 1834-35, a fire destroyed much of Dixontowne but did not damage any homes; this made it one of only two villages in Kane County that were completely unaffected by fire during that period (the other being Racine). During World War II, many people from Winnetka served in various branches of the United States military including armed forces stationed overseas or within localities adjacent to Kane County such as Quincy and Palatine. Many members of the community lost their lives during wartime efforts such as serving in Patton's Third Army or working on munitions plants across Illinois northeast of Chicago where they labored under difficult conditions day and night under often hazardous conditions without proper safety equipment or rest breaks while exposed to harmful chemicals and sparks from welding torches
