In 1841, Winnetka became part of Chicago and its citizens were forced to abandon their homes and come to live in an area that was full of raw land. The community's name comes from John Neely Bryan, who donated land for a post office and store in Winnetka Township. The first school opened in 1851 and was taught by Mrs. Sarah Hays until 1861 when it became a public school under control of Chicago School District No. 1. In 1865, Leland Stanford donated land for building a new University campus on his estate near Archer Road/Wangaratta Avenue; this university would later become Stanford University. In 1895, following World War I, many American soldiers returning home found work opportunities available only outside Chicago thanks to wartime production increases; this led to the founding of wineries throughout Cook County as well as other businesses within Winnetka township dating back to those days including Butternut Baking Company (now known as Bob’s Red Mill), Jello Bites Root Beer Machine Company (now known as Lakeview Creamery), Waffle House #5 (now known as Joe’s Pizza), Al Capone’s gangs headquarters (closed down in 1966) and more recently Goldfish restaurant which has been located on Jackson Boulevard since 1978
