In 1865, Charles Fenton opened a general store which became one of Winnetka's most important institutions; it still operates as an independently owned business today. In 1898, when Chicago annexed neighboring village of Lockport, Winnetka became one of its five townships within Chicago limits. That same year saw also the opening of Waukegan Electric Railway Company’s first line which connected downtown with Winnetka via three miles of trackage rights already lying within the town limits – this line would become known as “the Main Line” today! During World War II many local military families took up arms to serve their country; some even left behind significant amounts of property which has since been developed into diverse neighborhoods including Midtown Glendale/Winnetka Park and Northwest Side Lynwood/Lakeview Terrace areas respectively. Many residents continue to live close to their military units throughout peacetime but maintain their historic roots by attending community events such as Veteran Day parades or Remembrance Day ceremonies at local cemeteries - all while keeping their homes intact!
