Winnetka, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 7,441 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Winnetka was founded in 1836 by John Leland and his wife Pamela. The Lelands were the first white settlers in what is now Winnetka. The name " Winnetka" comes from the word winnow which means to clear away or bring to light something with tines or a harpoon. This name may also be derived from the old French word for market place - Nantes - meaning "Nantucket". When English settlers arrived in this area they took on the Indian name of Potawatomi for their new land acquired from the Lenape people. The first settler in what is now Winnetka was John Leland who came to this area about 1836 with his family. They named their farm (later known as Leland's Prairie) after John's father-in-law, Drury Lane, who had died earlier that year at age 73 years old. Leland's Prairie became one of five original townships in Cook County when it was organized on November 3, 1837. At that time it included all of modern day Winnetka along with parts of Armitage and Maywood. On August 15, 1850, voting began for a new county government which eventually resulted in the creation of Cook County proper on January 1st, 1851 under Governor Andrew Johnson himself! In 1860 over 60% of residents living within 5 miles (8 km) of downtown Chicago voted to secede from Cook County and form DuPage County! However due to political instability within DuPage County following Abraham Lincoln's election as president on November 4th those residents ultimately returned toCookCounty on February 14th 1861! During World War II many factory jobs were created here including aircraft manufacturing plants such as Boeing and American Aviation Corporation (AAL).
