However, businesses such as Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney & Co., Kmart Corporation (now Macy's), Ford Motor Company (now Ford) still flourished due to their location within walking distance of almost everyone in Chicago or close enough for phone service but not so close that customers couldn't get products or services if needed them without going out of town unlike today where most companies are located within an hour's drive or less also unlike prewar days when trips downtown were necessary for many items such as meatpacking plants which produced beef then drove across town to get it
