In Winnetka, Illinois, rifles and shotguns have been part of the town's history for over 200 years. The first gunsmith in Winnetka was James Ahern who opened his business in 1827. In 1869, Samuel Winchester established a gunsmith shop on State Street. By 1903, all guns were required to be cleaned by a licensed firearms dealer in Winnetka. The early 20th century saw a large growth in shooting sports in Winnetka. In 1915, the Chicago World's Fair featured threegun matches between America’s top shooters and their international counterparts at the Park Place Armory. The event was so successful that similar matches were held every year from then on until 1975 when they were discontinued due to security concerns at the fairgrounds. Gun cleaning became an important part of community life during this time because it helped protect citizens from using unlicensed firearms and also prevented unauthorized use of the town's fire arms by criminals or other gangsster-type individuals. Winnetka, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Winnetka Township and lies on the Fox River near Chicago. Winnetka is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The land that would become Winnetka was first settled by Germans in 1795 as Oberndorf am Forster See. In 1835, John Richardson purchased 4,555 acres (2 km²) in what is now Winnetka from his brother-in-law and father-in-law for $5 ($140/acre). He began to build a sawmill on his property which became one of the largest mills in the United States. Richardson's mill remains today as a museum located within walking distance of downtown Winnetka. In 1846, Amos Wright founded Wrightstown on lands he had acquired east of present day Winnetka along with 2,000 acres (10 km²) of forested swamp including parts of present day Kane County and McHenry County. The town was named after Amos Wright's older brother Elijah who had died young while serving in the U.S. military during the American Civil War. During World War II more than 100 businesses were built in or around Winnetka including 50 aircraft manufacturers and innumerable war-related products such as rubber balls and ammunition; some still operate today under different names such as "Wright Air Products". After World War II many industries closed down due to recession but many others have since returned including furniture manufacturer Steinway & Sons which continues to produce grand pianos under their old name until now; Singer Sewing Machines; Beloit Corporation (); Waukegan Brewing Company (); Lake Zurich Materials Facility (); Allis Chalmers Manufacturing Company (). The post office opened in 1886 and continued operation until it was discontinued by mail service on July 1st 1978.; also during this time several small villages were formed around winnettaka such as Park Avenue (), Hinsdale Avenue (), Glenview Avenue () etc.; these villages are no longer existent but their namesakes remain commemorated through various parks or Streets named after them

Winnetka was founded in 1837 and named for George Washington Winnetke. The first post office in Winnetka opened in 1840. In 1846, the platted town of Winnetka was renamed after Major-General David DixonWinnetke who had fought in the Mexican–American War and also served as Secretary of War under President Polk. The towns of Northfield and Westville were merged into Winnetka in 1854.In 1870, a new courthouse was built on the west side of Main Street adjacent to what is now Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Business Administration; this building still stands today and is used as an administrative offices for the university. In 1893, a millinery monopoly by Fannie Lou Hamer resulted in one hundred businesses closing their doors because she refused to allow competition from women's cooperatives; this event has been called "the last great textile industry collapse." A new small town development on Chicago Avenue near White River Junction replaced most of the mills closed down there with heavy investment from John Darnall (founder and CEO of Darnall & Company). By 1915, nearly all manufacturing had moved out to bigger plants outside of Chicago due to advances in technology which made it easier to produce goods cheaply than ever before. However, during World War II much rural production took place within sight or sound of Chicago due toocaust refugees streaming into Illinois looking for work that could be done close by without havingto go far away (this led to problems with pollution caused by factories). When war ended 1945 many companies went bankrupt or were sold off as part of municipal bankruptcy laws passed at that time which required any company larger than ten employees must file for bankruptcy protection. Afterward many people returned home while others continued working at smaller companies until they too went bankrupt or disappeared entirely during economic restructuring following the end of World War II
