Winnetka was founded by Jabez Winnetka and his brother Amos in 1837. The first settler in what is now Winnetka was John Weninger who arrived in 1838. In 1840, George Washington Carver moved to Winnetka from Jacksonville, Florida with his family. In 1850 the first school was opened inWinnetka under the name of "Grace Mission". Mr. Fenton took over as teacher and soon after built a new schoolhouse which still stands today on White Prairie Road near present day Lombard Avenue. The first post office inWinnetka was established on October 17, 1851 by Jabez Winnetka with Elias Norris as mail carrier. The original post office building still stands today on Market Street across from Griggs Middle School which serves as the current office building for the town government since it burned down in 1961 while being used as a storage facility for local businesses. Mrs. Clara Barton served as postmistress from 1861-1865 and then Mrs . Anna Shields from 1865-1911 until her death due to natural causes; she had been appointed by Mayor Meeker to fill that position following Barton's death.. In 1870 another store and hotel were established inWinnetka by Jno Bogan and ran until it closed its doors for lack of customers during the Great Depression; it reopened under new management when Prohibition became effective two years later.. In 1915 an expressway connecting Chicago to Joliet via Skokie was completed north of WinnetKA with mainline traffic stoplights at each end.; this highway remains one of Chicago's most visible landmarks to this day.. After World War II many manufacturers migrated to Illinois including Ford Motor Company., General Electric., Sears Holdings Corporation., Kodak etc.; these companies laid down their factories throughout Kane County making WinNETKA known as "The Manufacturing Capital of Illinois." During this time there were several major events that impacted WinNETKA such as: prohibition (the repeal of allowing liquor sales), national indigestion riots (1892), World War I (1914-1916) when numerous soldiers came through town service troops replacements; also during WWI large quantities of food were stockpiled due to shortages created by Europe's war machine; also mass layoffs occurred due to factory closings during WWII.. Many notable winnetskas have passed away including: Driscoll Daughters Paper Mill owner Elizabeth Woolridge McCormick passed away after a long battle with cancer on November 9th, 2002 aged 83 years old; she had been president and CEO of McCormick & Co since 1978.. Also notable are former Mayor Edwin Meeker who died after a long illness on December 3rd, 2003 aged 83 years old and wife Clara Barton who passed away less than six months later on January 4th, 2004 aged 93 years old both residents ofWinNETKA
In 1868, Winnetka, Illinois was founded by John A. Winfield and family. The town was named after the winnowing machines used to produce flour in the area. In 1912, the Chicago & Northwestern Railway built a line from Chicago to Winnetka and the town became incorporated. The first post office opened in Winnetka on May 1, 1869. The following year, a school was established inWinnetka and the town had six residents by 1876. Business inWinnetka began to grow as people started to settle in the area for work or pleasure. By 1910, there were over 100 businesses inWinnetka and it had a population of 1,500. In 1915, WN&R announced they would close their lines at Waukegan (the original terminus) and all trains ceased operations at Winnetka on November 2 that year.
