Winnetka, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 7,782 at the 2010 census. The town is located in the heart of the Chicago metropolitan area and is home to many large corporations like Comcast and PepsiCo. Winnetka was first settled by German immigrants in 1847. The town was originally called New Ulm but changed its name to Winnetka after General WinnetKA's wife, Sarah Maria Weiser-Winnetka. The original business district of Winnetka was on the north side of Lake Michigan and included parts of what are now Kenwood and North Side neighborhoods on the south side of lake. In 1853, two brothers founded a grocery store in what is now Lincoln Park with produce from their farm on Jackson Street between State and Douglas streets. This grocery store became one of the largest in town and remained open until it closed in 1906 when a new grocery store opened on Wabash Avenue near State Street. In 1912, an insurance company moved from Milwaukee to move its headquarters from downtown Chicago to Winnetka where it remained for thirty years before moving again to nearby Downers Grove in 1960. In 1922, winnowing machines were installed at what is now KFC's corporate offices which helped speed up production for their then US$2 million annual sales volume (today’s sales range between $20 million-$30 million). After World War II, KFC began making larger contributions towards local charities including building a schoolhouse for needy children and donating land for a playground that would later become known as KFC Field (later renamed Wrigley Field). The post-war boom brought about increased industrial development along Higgins Road which ran through Winnetka center connecting factories with warehouses storing materials being shipped back into America during peacetime while war time produced munitions needed by American soldiers all over Europe - some still stored here today! By 1975 there were over 100 businesses employing over 1,500 people within 3 blocks of Center Plaza mall! A new courthouse also opened that year serving as both court house/judicial branch as well as administrative office including records management/ archiving services for several thousand+ government agencies plus thousands more private firms!! Finally, in 2002, two-thirds of the city seceded from Cook County and formed their own independent municipality known as Winnetka-Rosenberg Township
