Winnetka, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 23,530 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Winnetka is located about 20 miles (32 km) northwest of Chicago and 50 miles (80 km) east of Peoria. The name Winnetka comes from the French word "winet" meaning "a sweet grape drink." In 1848, John Wistar and his brother Peter founded what later became Winnetka Township on land they had bought from the Kaskaskia people. In 1856, Samuel Morse established a post office in Winnetka Township. In 1872, the first railroad right-of-way was completed through Winnetka Township and it became a municipality on May 6th that year. The city of Chicago annexed Winnetka on February 15th, 1893. The township's shops and mills closed by World War II due to high demand for munitions during World War I; however, some remain today including Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney/AIGgressive Outlet Corporation (now Macy's), Johnson Controls Inc., Auerbachs Fine Jewels and many other businesses which contribute to the local economy. Today there are few hospitals or major employers in the township; most residents commute to jobs in nearby Chicago or Peoria. In addition to its role as an agricultural center during its early years - winnowing grain being one activity - Winnetka also supplied flour for breadmaking at two large baking companies: John Deere & Co.'s churns at their facilities adjacent to Main Street until 1918 and Pillsbury Company's ovens at their factory on State Street until 1922; these were followed by numerous others throughout Cook County before Bakelite began making electric oven batterboxes beginning in 1931 with Didion Baking Company #5B located just outside of town limits near present day La Grange Park Cemetery Parkway across from Ford’s Theatre). Many small businesses have since closed down because: internet marketing has taken over more than half of bakery sales world wide; digital delivery has made packaging much easier; outsourcing has increased with companies like Amazon coming into town with millions of dollars worth[1]; transportation choices have become increasingly expensive with several highways crossing into town boundaries making it difficult if not impossible for locals to get around without driving out into neighboring towns such as Lenox Grove Heights or Highland Park
In 1839, Winnetka was the location of a small Indian village that was destroyed by white settlers. The town was founded in 1851 by Andrew J. Dixon and his brother-in-law, Elijah Carden. It grew rapidly during the 1850s and 1860s, becoming a center for commerce and industry. In 1863, Winnetka was renamed after George Washington Winnetka, an early settler who had been instrumental in its development. The town experienced significant growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s, becoming one of the most prosperous communities in Illinois. In 1998,Winnetka became one of seventy-eight cities in Illinois to be honored with an award from the National Civic League for their commitment to civic engagement.
