In 1840 Samuel Morse moved from Boston to establish a line of telegraph wires through what is now Winnetka; this became known as Morse Code. In 1847 David Prentice bought land east of the Wabash River and built a dam on the river for irrigation purposes; this became known as Prentice Dam. The first store in Winnetka opened on December 12th,1849 by Elisha Cook under the name of Cook's Store & post office. On January 1st 1850, it was renamed winnetka stores (based off of Cincinnati). Second store opening: January 15th 1850 by Abraham Blythe at 975 N Michigan Avenue (now Northwestern University). By 1860 there were 5 stores including 3 grocery stores and 2 feedstores inWinnetKA.(Based off of Cincinnati) On May 16th 1860 Union Pacific Railroad reached Winnetka fromChicago via Rock Island Railroad Station On October 12th 1861 during World War II when Germans invaded America through Illinois they set up an ambush outside of town killing 7 people including 4 children
