Winnetka, Illinois is a small town located in Kane County, Illinois. The population of Winnetka was 9,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Winnetka has a rich history dating back to 1827 when it was named after George Washington's farm on the west side of the Chicago River. In 1829, John Kinney and his brother James bought land in what is now Winnetka from George Washington. They named their farm "Winnetka" after themselves and their friend and business partner Amos Kendall. The Kinneys were among the first farmers in Winnetka and started cultivating land in 1827. Their farmstead became one of the most important in town because it sat on high ground that offered a great view of downtown Chicago. The Kinneys were also able to provide goods and services to their customers through their store and home. The early settlers in Winnetka were mainly students from nearby University Park who came for lectures or meals at theKinney home during term time or for field work during summer vacations. In 1839, when Congress passed an act authorizing Mayor John Fayette to start sales of lands within Kaneland Township for public use, George Washington donated 4 acres (16 hectares) north of where his estate still stands near present-day State Street to be used as a parkland known as "Washington Woods." This donation marked the beginning of Winnetka's years as an agricultural center with people coming from all over Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Canada to purchase tracts of land here for farming purposes such as raising dairy cows or growing wheat. With this new source of income and access to clean water available only through canals built by means other than surface water flooding - winnetsakers began turning out high quality cheese since there was no available milk from any other sources - interestinwinnetsaking increased even further among these early entrepreneurs! A few years later, Amos Kendall opened a store off State Street which became one of the most popular tourist spots in town because it had an excellent view outfitted with comfortable chairs and umbrellas against hot sun exposure while browsing its impressive selection of wines by appointment only! From this store came many more people seeking information about winnetsaking along with samples/views forbidden elsewhere due to practical concerns like theft! Many local businesses followed suit beginning with Mrs.'s Silk Millinery which produced beautiful damask fabric by hand starting in 1840 until 1964 when ownership transferred to Sears Incorporated! This period saw growth not only for winnetsakers but also for townsfolk who ventured into business ventures such as meatpacking companies supplying beef to local farms; shoe stores catering both retail customers looking for fashionable shoes (and taking advantage of natural dyes brought over by importation) as well as tourists needing lodging; several general stores providing everything needed including groceries; post office; Masonic Lodge #5 where Correspondence Courses were given every Wednesday evening until 1907 ; two churches being built - First Congregational Church (#4), erected 1889-90 replacing an earlier building that burned down that year; schoolhouse #1 (1896); second church (#3), erected 1903-04 replaced an earlier building that burned down that year also serving Methodist congregation until 1988 when it closed due to lack Of pupil enrollment although portions have been preserved & reopened under new name 'Church on Wacker'). On October 25th 1893 two brothers named Arthur Smith opened up a grocery store at 190 N Main Street,. At first they tried selling just bread but soon realized they could do much more! In 1912 they added eggs too making them oneofthe largest producers & sellersofeggsinAmerica at that time!!! After World War IArthur Smith sold his Store To Mr.. Pfeffer who ran ittilhisdeathIn1974!! For many years afterwards various family members ran different side businesses sharing some common goals including continued productionofgoodbye-cakesuntil finally closing shop altogetherIn1999!!!!

The Panic of 1893 caused a severe economic decline for Winnetka which slowly recovered throughout the 20th century thanks to initiatives like public education and infrastructure development.
