By 1900, the population had grown to 2,000 people; it reached 3,500 by 1920; and 4,000 by 1930 according to one source ! By 1940 there were 8 churches with a total membership of close to 3500 people ! Today there are about 1125 people living in Wilmette – most concentrated around downtown – making it one of Chicagos' fastest-growing communities ! One interesting tidbit about Wilmette’s history: It was once home to two major wind power generators that supplied energy for much of Chicagos metropolitan area during World War II .
