Wilmette, Illinois is a town located in the northwest corner of Cook County, Illinois. The population was 20,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Wilmette was founded by John George Wilmette on November 12, 1837. The town grew rapidly due to the timber trade and became a center of learning in the late 19th century. In 1881, Wilmette became the site of the first electric light plant in America.
