In 1887, a man by the name of George Wilmette organized and opened the first rifle store in Wilmette. The store was located on Clyffe Avenue and was open for business until 1923. In 1895, George Wilmette married Anna Lounsbury and they moved to a larger location on State Street in Wilmette. In 1912, the couple bought a farm near Chicago and continued to operate their rifle store there until their death in 1935. Their son, John Wilmette, took over the business after their deaths. John Wilmette sold the business to Harry Weisbrod in 1951. Weisbrod operated it until 1964 when it was closed down due to lack of customers. It reopened under new ownership in 1966 before being closed again in 1971. It then reverted back to its original name before finally closing for good in 1984.
Wilmette is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 54,811 at the 2010 census. It is the home of Northwestern University and Motorola Solutions. The name "Wilmette" is derived from the French words for "plain" and "village". The original town site was on a small island in Lake Michigan, between two branches of the Chicago River. A landing place for ships having arrived at the mouth of the Chicago River was needed to transport goods to and from Great Lakes ports. In 1836, a group of businessmen organized by Joshua Green erected a gristmill on what is now First Street in Wilmette. They named it after Captain John Quincy Adams' father-in-law, General James Wilkinson (1694–1768), who had served as commander of British forces during the American Revolution and had been rewarded with an estate near Wilmette. In 1857, Wright brothers flying machines were demonstrated by Orville Wright at Wilmette's North Side Cemetery before their first public demonstration at Hawthorne Field outside Chicago on July 17th that year. The city fathers granted building permits for three new churches: St. Anthony's Episcopal Church (1858), German Evangelical Lutheran Church (1859), and Polish Catholic Parish (1860). In 1860, Judge George Waring built his house on Clyffe Avenue across from Trinity Cathedral; he became one of the first citizens to own property in what would become downtown Wilmette. By 1870, Grange Insurance Company had become one of America's leading insurance companies; its president was Augustus Saint Gaudens. Grocery stores opened up throughout central Illinois following prohibition in 1920; dairy products started being produced there beginning in 1924; auto parts began becoming available here in 1927; Purdue Pharma synthesized OxyContin here beginning in 1999; Hollywood film company Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer established its facilities here beginning production of films such as 'Gone Withthe Wind' (1939) and 'Some Like It Hot' (1959). The population reached 55,000 when Interstate 95was completed connecting Chicago with other large northern cities; suburban development increased demand for space within City limits while also creating problems such as traffic congestion around campus buildings which led to plans to add more lanes through downtown Wilmette into order to relieve this issue but these efforts failed due to opposition from local businesses who felt they would lose market share ifitualy annexed by nearby neighborhoods like Calumet Park or Streamwood Hills

Wilmette was founded in 1847 by John Wilmette and his brother, George. The town was named after their father, who had been born in the small town of Wilmette, Illinois, in 1824. The brothers opened a general store and post office in the town. In 1850, they married Sarah Jane Morel; they would have four children. In 1862, the Union army burned down the local general store; John Wilmette rebuilt it and continued to operate it until his death in 1903. The store is still standing and is open to the public today. In 1865, John Wilmette organized the first municipal election in Illinois using a voting machine that he designed himself. He also donated land for a school district and other civic improvements. The town experienced rapid growth during its early years; between 1850 and 1860, it grew from 5 to 30 residents! By 1870, however, it had reached its present size of over 100 residents. One of the most important aspects of Wilmette’s growth within its first few decades was its reliance on trade: goods brought into the town were sold directly to consumers or used as ingredients for products sold inside the store itself! This type of commerce helped support an overall economy that was based on agriculture and manufacturing rather than speculative investment or credit-based business practices common at this time. In 1875, John Wilmette erected a large brick building that served as both his grocerystore and home office; this structure remains extant today (though it has been renovated several times). Over time, other businesses followed suit: a dry-goods store (1892), bakery (1910), flour mill (1913), lumberyard (1920), restaurant (1925), water tower (1945) – all serving an economic purpose within their respective sectors of local commerce. John WilmotTE's contributions to Illinois' history are numerous: he founded two towns - one near Chicago & one just west of Streator - along with developing new technologies such as voting machines which were later refined into current day democracy processes across America through elections like those held today in Illinois!
