Wilmette, Illinois is a small city located in the Chicago metropolitan area. The population of Wilmette was 23,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of Metropolitan Chicago. From 1847 to 1871, it was known as Germania (Germantown). The community was named for Prince Francis Augustus of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and brother of Emperor Ferdinand II. In 1871, when Wilmette became a town, it was still under Danish rule and its name changed to Østergaard. The current name comes from a grant by Abraham Lincoln in 1867 to Majerus Christensen and his family for land east of the river that forms their boundary with Novato on the south side. The history of Wilmette goes back to 1795 when Nicholas Gist — one half owner of the Michigan & Ohio Canal — built a sawmill on what would become First Street. By 1800, there were ten businesses in the village; four blacksmiths, three printers, two stores, and one hotel. In 1807–08 five men from Minden built an gristmill on South First Street; it did not operate until 1840 because water supplies were inadequate for such a large mill project. In 1847–49 Wilhelm Nolde bought 1/4 mile (0.6 km) east of present day Third Avenue along what would later be Second Street from Adam Sultana and donated it to the townspeople in memory of his father Friedrich Wilhelm Nolde (1792–1855). On July 20th following Nolde's donation two roadblocks were erected at intersections near where he had given property away: One block north on SecondStreet between Lakeshore Road and State Avenue; another block west on Third Avenue between Washington Boulevard and State Avenue Two more blocks westward down Third Avenue until they met at Fourth Street NE served as numbered blocks starting with 1st Block North then 2nd Block West until they reached 5th Block East which started at Lake Shore Road instead Wilmette first appeared on maps dating back to 1795 as Germantown although this name appears nowhere else until about 1800 when several businesses began using it including Nicholas Gist’s sawmill which continued operations until 1840 . After Wilhelm Nolde donated land adjacent to what would become Third avenue (later Second street) in memoryof his father Friedrich Wilhelm Nolde(1792-1855), settlers put up 2 roadblocks Sept 27 th 1861 forming our current map boundaries
