Wilmette is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 26,803 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first Wilmette settlement was founded by Abram and Noah Wilmette on the banks of the Calumet River in 1847. The town was named after its founder's father, William Eustace Wilmette. Wilmette grew rapidly due to its location on the railroads and their demand for goods and services. By 1880, it had a population of over 50 people. In 1886, the Illinoisan newspaper reported that "Wilmette has long been one of our most thriving towns." In 1898, Mayor John Haughton approved a resolution denouncing polygamy as an abomination which caused many residents to leave the town in protest. This event is known as "the flight of the Wilmettes". Many families moved out because they could not support polygamy and no other form of sexual expression outside of traditional marriage had been legalized then or still is today in Illinois. During World War II, much activity took place in and around Wilmette due to its strategic location on Lake Michigan just across from Canadaon both sides of the border. As a result, many factories were built here including Ford Motor Company's Rouge plant which produced military vehicles during World War II also Koppers candy company who made karoake drinks during that time period . Other major businesses located here during this time include Smiths Paper Products (now Kraft) which originated from what is now Old Navy; Armour Manufacturing Incorporated (now Allstate); American Tobacco subsidiary Lorillard Cigarette manufacturing plants; Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company headquarters; Wernick Travel agency; Brown Brothers Harriman cigars company; Winthrop Chemical Corporation oil refineries producing gasoline for cars and trucks
