Wilmette, Illinois is a city located in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. The population was 53,651 at the 2010 census. It is the sixth-largest city in Illinois and the largest city outside of Chicago. Wilmette is one of two cities in Cook County (the other being Chicago) that have a population over 50,000. The first settlement in what would become Wilmette was made on November 15, 1824 by John Neely Bryan and his family when they arrived from Kentucky with three families. They named their new town after General David Dixon’s brigade during the War of 1812 which had passed through their area on its way to Fort Dearborn near Peoria. At first it consisted only of a few tents and a few farmhouses. In 1825, John Neely Bryan organized what became known as “The First Wilmette Church” which served as the town’s church until 1828 when Holy Cross Episcopal Church was built on Prairie Avenue just east of Chambers Street. The Knoppers moved into their new home on May 1, 1827 and soon started trading goods they had brought overland from Indiana for goods available at this location including flour, cattle, hides and feathers from Native Americans living hereabouts. By 1830 there were about twenty people living in what would later become Wilmette proper On October 5th of that year an act was passed by the state legislature authorizing “an appropriation to be made for erecting wharves upon said river” A wharf was eventually built but never used because navigation around these bends became difficult due to rapids caused by storms each spring and fall since even today you can find remnants of this structure if you go downriver several miles
