Wilmette, Illinois was founded in 1847 by Horace Greeley and his family. The city became a manufacturing center in the early 1800s, with leatherworkers, printers, and other businesses existing. In 1865, Wilmette was incorporated as a town. The population grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s, reaching over 100,000 by 1910. However, World War I caused a decline in production and jobs; the city's population peaked at around 150,000 in 1925 but decreased to just under 100,000 by 1930. After World War II the city experienced growth as new industries emerged; however, there has been little substantive change to its demographics since then.
Wilmette is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,521 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Chicago and the most populous of its five wards. Wilmette has a rich history dating back to 1847, when it was known as "Wenatchee." In 1865, Wenatchee became the second incorporated town in Cook county after Chicago. The first post office in Wilmette was established on December 1, 1847. The name of the town came from an Indian word meaning "the place where two rivers meet," which refers to the two branches of the Kankakee River that flow through Wenatchee (now east of downtown). A post office called Wellesley opened on November 17, 1852; it closed on July 14, 1861. One account attributes the establishment of a new railroad line between Chicago and St. Louis by George Pullman to President Abraham Lincoln's interest in Wellesley as a possible site for his presidential library and museum. On February 10, 1903, Mayor James Phelan proposed that all cities be merged into one municipality with an initial population of 5081 inhabitants; this would have included Wilmette with its current population of 24,521 people (27% of all residents). The proposal failed to gain enough support from city officials and citizens so it died without any action being taken.(1) On November 3rd 1920 voters passed a proposition creating Lake Michigan Naval base property within Wilmette limits along with 54 acres (22 hectares) surrounding what is now Ryan Park Avenue(2). This project gained national attention due to concerns that ships might be sunk off shore during future storms; however no such disasters occurred.(3) In 1957–1958 plans were made to rename streets and avenues statewide following recommendations by then-Mayor Richard Jakielski; these changes were ultimately successful and took effect on October 1st 1958.(4) However some persistent confusion still exists over which streets are actually named after which people or organizations- most notably Northwestern University's Law School building located at Wacker Drive & State Street.- See full article here: https://www-wilmetteillinois.gov/about/history/vikings_and_nlp
