Wilmette, Illinois is a city located in the northwest corner of Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 61,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Wilmette were farmers who arrived from New England in 1787. They named their community after Mayor John Wilmot of London (1688-1745), who had played an important role in promoting early English settlements in that region. By 1800, the town had about fifty residents and was situated on a bend of the Fox River between its two namesake rivers—the North and Southwesterly—making it convenient for transportation to neighboring cities and for trade with other parts of the Midwest. In 1837, Congress passed an act providing for a county seat within Cook County; Wilmette was chosen over Rockford because of its strategic location on one side of the river and its close proximity to Chicago. The town's growth continued apace during this time: by 1850, it had reached 1,500 residents and boasted twenty-four shops and three churches. In 1857, however, disagreements over railroad construction led to violence that destroyed several buildings and left dozens injured; as a result of this event, Congress passed legislation establishing a new county government which placed Wilmette under control of a board of commissioners. Wilmette was founded in 1847 as a small settlement on the Chicago River by Dutch immigrants who arrived in 1846. The name is derived from William H. Wilmotts tavern which stood on the bank of that river near where it flows into Lake Michigan today. The first post office was established in 1848 and named for Colonel John Wiltse, an American soldier who had fought with General Harrison during the Mexican War and also served as inspector general of Indian Affairs under Ulysses S.
