Gun targets have been present in Wilmette, Illinois since the 1800s. In 1824, Captain John Thornton of the U.S. Army's 7th Infantry Regiment purchased a small parcel of land along the banks of the Chicago River for use as a rifle range and shooting park. The site was known as Thornton's Point and is now home to Illinois State Fairgrounds. The first target gun at Thornton's Point was a muzzleloader that was used by Capt. John Hickey to shoot game from his hunting cabin near by in 1828. Hickey also built what is now the northwest corner of fairgrounds which served as a training ground for future officers of state militias during the War of 1812. By 1836, two shotguns were being fired at long range on an annual basis from Thornton's Point by Capts Joshua Frye and Solomon Griggs (later member of Congress). In 1840, Major General Simon Bolivar Butler leased 90 acres along Quincy Road north of downtown Chicago for use as a rifle range and pistol range with 10 rounds per day allowed per weapon. The area became known as Butler's Prairie and continued to be used until 1865 when it was closed due to construction work on Soldier Field across the street. In 1861, Captain George Armstrong Purchased 8 acres located east side of river between High Street and Washington Avenue for rifle range use only; this property became Armstrong Park in 1888 when it merged with Harrison Park which covered most of Dearborn County southward to I-55/I-89 junction In 1881, Captain Arthur Ashe purchased 60 acres just east side High Street between Marshall Avenue and Randolph Road for rifle practice only; this property became Ashe Park in 1902 when it merged with Cook Jeffrey Municipal Park which included part of Wilmette southward to I-555/I-89 junction In 1916, Capt Robert Jahn leased 3 parcels including 2 blocks extending northerly on Ashland Avenue between Clarkston Boulevard and Randolph Road from Wm Gurney & Sons Hardware Store owners Isaac Heller & Abraham Heller who operated a meat market thereon This lease was transferable & its terms were changed several times over its duration providing Hunting Ground privileges rights (& access) to members club affiliated with National Rifle Association (NRA) via renting or purchase contract

Today there are several dozen businesses located within a five-mile radius of GMC’s former site including restaurants, bars, shops and office buildings.GMC left behind a lasting legacy as one of America’s largest employers: more than 1 million people worked here during its heyday while also building or contributing to some of Illinois’ top tourist destinations such as DePaul University campus and Millennium Park Despite this history however, many people still live locally because of tight community ties fostered by churches, civic organizations and business groups dating back decades . With so much commercial activity taking place outside the town limits these days however there may be little opportunity for residents to mix with other locals even if they wanted to .
