Wilmette, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 61,871 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County. The city is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Wilmette was William Matson who built a cabin on the site in 1836. In 1837, John Dickson founded the town of Wilmette on land he had bought from Matson. Dickson named it for his home country of France and its capital City of Paris which he had seen while touring Europe during the 1830s. In 1839, Daniel Webster moved to Wilmette from Quincy and donated land to build a public square that still stands today on Michigan Avenue between State Street and Randolph Street. The village was incorporated as a town on November 3, 1840 by ordinance of the General Assembly under the name "Wilmette". On October 7, 1841 Abraham Lincoln announced his candidacy for President and called upon people to come to Springfield Illinios to hear him speak about Kansas Cattle Road (the original name for Union Pacific Railroad). A crowd of about 10,000 people gathered at Washington Park in downtown Wilmette and following Lincoln's speech formed an election procession through town ending at Market Square where they deposited their ballots into large urns prepared byWebster himself before marching off into downtown Springfield

It lies on the eastern edge of Chicago and is bordered by the city to the north and west, Cicero Township to the south and southwest, Wilmette Park to the east and northeast, and Lake Forest to the northwest. The first settler in what is now Wilmette was John McNaught who arrived in 1824. He named his land "Willingboro" after his will's trust fund beneficiary William Biddeford Willing. A post office called Willington was established in 1827; it later became part of Cicero Township. In 1830, James Laughlin moved from Indiana and platted what is now downtown Wilmette with two churches as its centerpiece: St. Patrick's Cathedral (1831) and Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church (1832). In 1835-36 Amos Wright built a log cabin on a hill overlooking present day City Hall Square across from the current courthouse complex; he named it "Lawnhurst". That same year James White moved into this area from Winnetka where he had recently founded an agricultural store called White Bros., which became one ofChicago's largest food retailers during that time period A new railroad line through Cook County was completed in 1846 by entrepreneur George Stephenson & Co.; it served as an important connection between Chicago and self-contained villages around Cook County like Elgin Heights (later known as Wheaton), Des Plaines, Elmwood Park (now Glenview), Northbrook Heights (now Arlington Heights), etc. The village growth around this railway station led some residents of surrounding communities – notably Lawnhurst – to nickname their respective new towns "Downtown Chicago" or "Wilmette". The name change came about because most people living near Downtown Chicago thought of themselves as residents of Wilmette when they happened upon another town with that name close by
