Wilmette, Illinois is a town located in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 31,824 at the 2010 census. The village of Wilmette is adjacent to the town and has a population of 5,812. The first permanent settler in what is now Wilmette was John Dearborn in 1839. He built a cabin on a hilltop near present-day Elmira Road and Chicago Avenue. At the time it was one of the most remote locations inDuPage County. In 1847, three brothers – John Atherton (1820-1892), Elijah Cook (1822-1901) and George Adams (1794-1867) – bought land from Dearborn for $10 per acre. They began building log cabins which they named "Homespun Fort". In 1849 they sold their holdings to James Kappenberger who donated the land for Hennepin County Central Library and School District #1. On October 30, 1852, Wilmette was incorporated as a township by state law 9383. It was named after General David Ziegler who had been innovative in organizing volunteer infantry regiments during the Mexican–American War and had supplied officers for many Illinois militia units during that conflict including Company I (2nd Regiment) of the 1st Infantry Regiment Armory Band Association with Drury’s Hennepin County Rifle Militia Battalion No 2 commanded by Captain Abraham Lincoln De Witt Cummings (1800-1885). It took until 1861 before Township boundaries were redrawn when much of DuPage County became part of Union Territory under Ulysses S Grant’s command following his victory at Antietam Creek on September 17 that year over Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell Smith (). As Union troops moved through Du Page County they encountered Methodist churches such as Zion Chapel erected since 1830 on lots donated by local farmers prior to statehood including Reverend Amos Kendall whose father Samuel Kendall founded Zion Chapel about 1800 along with other churches including First Presbyterian Church built around 1787 soon followed by Second Presbyterian Church also soon followed by Baptist Churches established between 1798 and 1800 according to one source while another source claims these denominations only started preaching within a few years after statehood but this extended period might have involved some form of coexistence or merger among various groups as several congregations may have shared an auditorium or property until finally achieving independence around 1830 as group identity appears to have gradually crystallized ). According to historian Edwin Mosely “the rise [of organized religion] can be seen largely as an outcome of developments within society itself: waves of immigrants arrived with new skills and knowledge; people responded eagerly to religious teachings; denominational organizations grew up spontaneously out of amalgamated former Protestant sects” . In 1860 Butler College Preparatory Academy () opened its doors early admitting girls without parental permission subjecting them initially to instruction from their mothers but eventually giving them access to boys also . In 1865 Anthony Wayne opened his millinery store just east off Chicago Avenue which became known as Wayne's Store later becoming headquarters for several other businesses such as Sears & Roebuck before being closed down in 1918 . Two years later he reopened it under different ownership with two stories high brick walls typical then for most commercial buildings west of downtown Chicago combined with modest storefront windows allowing customers entry side street sidewalk parallel North Ave east into alley then turning south into Sheppard Avenues main thoroughfare impeding views out onto Loop Drive due north .) In 1870 Anthony Wayne constructed what is now Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co building still standing today across from Parkview Cemetery next door founder Anthony Wayne's son Walter Payson operated it starting late 19th century until 1923 when it went into receivership ) By 1890 there were 14 saloons operating in township limits although only six served alcohol exclusively accordingor alledgedly doing so throughout most if not all decades ) By 1900 there were 22 grocery stores comprising nine large grocers plus four small groceries ; six hotel rooms ; ten homes; six schools serving grades PreK through 12th grade (. These establishments attracted more residents than anything else because goods available at local merchants rivaled those obtainable from larger cities ): eleven blacksmith shops ; five stores selling Hardware valued at $700 per week (+$5 per day); four brick ovens manufacturing bread worth about $4 each + two WARRANTY STORE STORES
