Wheeling, Illinois is a city in the US state of Illinois. The population was 38,595 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kane County.

It is located on the west bank of the Des Plaines River, about 25 miles (40 km) south of Chicago. The first white settlers arrived in 1814, when Nicholas Haggerty and his family built a cabin on what is now State Street in present-day Wheeling. In 1818, John Richardson founded Richardson's Mills around this same location, which became one of Wheeling's most important economic engines during its early years. By 1871, however, mills had closed down due to lack of demand and competition from nearby Chicago; Wheeling's only industry until after World War II was agriculture. After that time it has been primarily a service center for Chicagoans and their businesses outlying areas such as Downers Grove and Aurora. In 1955, when Illinois merged with Indiana to form the United States federal government under President Dwight D Eisenhower's "New Deal", Wheeling became one of 12 cities within Indiana newly included within the new federal district called Chicago–Normal; also included were Elgin and Bloomington in Illinois' northwest corner along with Terre Haute and Lafayette inIndiana's east corner . This arrangement continued until 1979 when Chicagoland reemerged as an independent entity through legislation passed by then-President Jimmy Carter following his failed attempt to create a New Central District encompassing all five southern suburbs of Chicago – including Wheeling – along with parts or all of eight other municipalities: Arlington Heights, Lemont Hills/Addison Hills & Palatine Park/ Schaumburg Township (northwest side), Oak Forest/Riverview Heights (southwest side), Northbrook (east side), Lawndale (central part), Evanston (southwestern edge). Chicagoland reverted back to its original territorial status upon ratification by Congress of the Constitution Plan amendment providing for fullfledged metropolitan regions within each state — againincluding Wheeling — which it achieved on October 15 that year pursuant to resolutions adopted by both houses concurrent with that event. The plan had been championed by then-Mayor Richard Jobe who saw political potential in its ramifications for job growth associated with increased transportation costs attendant with suburban growth throughout Cook County includingWheeling; indeed many key decisions surrounding Chicagoland’s emergence during those years were made at meetingplaces such as those held at McCormick Place near downtownChicago where officials from various jurisdictions met en masse to hammer out details prior to formal adoption by both chambers three days later on November 3rd."

Wheeling was founded in 1836 by James C. Ferris as a wagon manufacturing and mercantile center. The town grew rapidly, becoming one of the largest settlements in Illinois. In 1851, Wheeling became the capital of the newly formed state of Illiniwek. The city experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century until it reached its peak in 1910 with a population of over 100,000 people. However, during World War I, Wheeling struggled with infrastructure problems and lost much of its economic importance. Since the war, Wheeling has seen sporadic growth and decline culminating in its current status as a small rural community with a population of under 10,000 people.
