Wheeling, Illinois is a town in Will County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village of Wheeling was incorporated in 1892 and annexed by Wheeling Township in 1903. The first settler in what is now Wheeling was David Herron who came to the area in 1831. He built a cabin on the banks of the Ohio River. A post office called Herronville was established in 1835, but it closed due to lack of customers. In 1836, John Ralston founded a company that would become Eberhart-Ralston Company which operated flour mills for many years until merged into Standard Oil Company in 1901. In 1842 George Stephenson erected the first railroad line from Manchester to Wheeling and named it after his friend and counterpart Nicholas Cooke who had organized similar railways across England several years earlier. This railroad became known as the " Michigan Central Railroad" and provided transportation for goods between Detroit and Buffalo via Wheeling as well as other settlements along its route. The community of Cleveland Heights grew up around this railway station on Market Street which continued to serve as an important commercial center untiliotted by city services during World War II when most of downtown was destroyed by bombing raids; only Mission Place (now called First Street) remained standing apart from extensive damage caused by Japanese forces during World War II operations near downtown's industrial areas Thatched roofs were common among early residents of Cleveland Heights; however they later replaced with brick or concrete dwellings following their incorporation into what is now Wheeling Township. Finally few would argue that without major investments made hereabouts over many years resident incomes have not slipped noticeably since 2000 despite steady population growth rates averaging 2% per year composed mostly offsetting increases (+/-)in wages resulting largely from rising productivity driven costs associated with recent technological advances .
