Gun targets have been a part of Wheeling's history for over 50 years. The first target was erected in 1909 on the old Armory property. It was an 8x8 inch metal plate with a black cloth dummy as the target. The first successful shooting at this target took place in 1913 by Captain John Hays, who is considered to be the founder of Wheeling's gunnery community. In 1915, Captain Hays organized and led a team of volunteers to erect a new 5x5 inch steel target on Park Avenue. This Target had two red circles which could be hit from any direction. The first successful shooting at this target took place in 1916 by Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Wesson, who is considered to be one of the most accomplished riflemen in American history. From 1916-1920, Wheeling hosted regular international Gun Targets events (attended by dignitaries such as King George V and Hollywood stars) which attracted many notable shooters from around the world. In 1919, Captain Hays donated his original 4x4 inch steel target to Wheeling Municipal Airport for use as agunnery range and airshow arena. This beautiful Target still stands today and can be seen every Saturday morning during airshows throughout Illinois and Indiana!

Wheeling is located in would-be Michigan Territory. On December 3, 1803, the first white people set foot on what is now known as the Wheeling Peninsula. The area that would become Wheeling was first settled by Shawnees and Potawatomi Indians in the mid-1700s. By 1800, most of this territory had been claimed by the United States. The first white settlement in what is now Wheeling occurred in 1825 when a group of Americans built a cabin on an alkaline peninsula that juts into Lake Erie. At first, the town was called "Wahpeton" after one of its founders. However, because it was adjacent to Indian country and there were reports ofIndian hostilities, the name was changed to "Wheeling" in 1827 after John Stephenson became its first postmaster. The town quickly grew due to its immediate access to water and other resources. In 1830, it had a population of about 150 people and became an important transportation hub for goods heading upriver from Detroit and other cities. For many years, Wheeling functioned as a stop on the Underground Railroad during the slave trade. In 1840, construction began on what would become Ohio's second largest canal system –the Erie Canal– which connected Buffalo with New York City. This new industry led to increased business opportunities for Wheeling and its residents; however, at times these economic advances also led to tensions with nearby farmers who felt they were taking advantage of their newest neighbor's misfortune. Despite these challenges, Wheeling continued to grow until 1970 when it reached its peak population size of around 26,000 people."

Wheeling, Illinois was founded on December 11, 1847 by George Armstrong Custer and his brother-in-law, James P. Stockbridge. The town was named for General George Armstrong Custer and his regiment of cavalry which had fought in the Mexican War. The first post office was established in the town on February 14, 1848. In 1853, the railroad arrived andWheeling became a boomtown with businesses such as saw mills and livery Stables catering to travelers. By 1871, the population had grown to over 10,000 people and it remained this size until 1950 when it decreased to 7,500 residents. During its peak years of growth during the 1800s Wheeling experienced a great deal of development however many aspects of its past have been lost in time. Many buildings still remain from that period including the courthouse which is now used as a museum.
Wheeling was founded in 1829 by Solomon Jeffery and is the oldest town in Illinois. The first post office was established in Wheeling on July 1, 1830. It moved to its current location in 1857. The city was named for General George Washington's army encampment at Winchester, Virginia, but the name was changed to Wheeling after the Battle of Fort Duquesne on October 17, 1814.
