The first guns with swivels were used in the French Revolutionary War. After the war, they became popular among European armies and navies. The elderly General George Washington was reported to have said, "A good musket can be fired only one way - with a straight arrow." This statement inspired James DeWolf to design a gun that could be aimed at different sides using a swivel system.DeWolf's invention was first used in 1828 in the Mexican War, and it soon became popular throughout Europe and North America. After World War II, many countries developed their own versions of thegunswivel system. The United Statesdeveloped its own version of the gunswivel system during World War II called "M1911". Wheeling, Illinois is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,827 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Kane County. The name "Wheeling" comes from the words "Wabash River," which means "oasis." The Wabash River flows through Wheeling and its predecessor towns for over 200 miles. The first European to visit what is now Wheeling was Father Marquette in 1795. Jesuit missionaries had been established in this area since 1697. Jesuit priests built a mission station on the banks of the Wabash River in 1799 and named it Mission Point after their patron saint, St. Ignatius of Loyola. In 1835, President Andrew Johnson designated Wheeling as the seat of Kane County due to its strategic location on two major rivers: the Wabash and Erie Rivers. In 1836, while still an unincorporated community called Westville, Wheeling became part of Kane County when representatives from all nine counties ratified a state constitution that created the new county with borders based on river valleys rather than townships or villages. At that time there were only seven townships in Kane County; these were added to by appropriate action ofthe General Assembly subsequent to ratification ofthe Constitution: Allegany Township (1839), Arlington Township (1843), Batavia Township (1845),Belleville Township (1846), Cassia Township (1849), Wyandotte township (1851). Each township had one representative on county board and each vote counted equally with every other township within herrange – no village status was granted to any town until 1909! The exceptionwas Belleville which received village status because it lies along both sides ofthe main branch canal that crossed Kankakee Creek just east of Chicago’s city limits

At first, gunswivels were just simple devices that allow the user to rotate the barrel around its axis. This was not particularly advantageous since it required some effort to keep hold of the weapon while rotating it. However, over time, designers realized that this feature could be used in order to aim the firearm more effectively at targets distant from the shooter. One early example of such an innovation was the musket ballista, which consisted of a cannon barrel that was attached to two or more sticks that were used to fire missiles at target audiences far away. Gun swivels also became popular during this time period because they allowed for much easier aiming when firing handguns or rifles. Additionally, these devices helped reduce accuracy errors caused by centrifugal forceinduced movement within a rifle barrel. Over time, however,gunswivels began becoming less common because they no longer offered many advantages over other types of mechanisms for achieving better accuracy and range when shooting firearms. Today, they are still occasionally used as historical curiosity items ornaments.

Wheeling, Illinois is an incorporated village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,899 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and was formed from a merger of two other villages—Erie and Midvale—in 1974. Wheeling is located on the banks of the Wabash River. The Village of Wheeling was organized on March 15, 1817 when ten families from Erie Township voted to form a village under the organization Act of 1795. On May 10, 1847, it passed an act to incorporate as a city under the name "Cookstown." Cookstown failed to gain city status and on November 14, 1851 it passed an act to incorporate as Wheeling with a population of 2,500 residents. This made Wheeling one of the largest cities in Illinois with a populations over 5,000 people. In 1872–73, it annexed both Midvale and Erie townships which combined had a population of 11,000 residents). In 1907–08 Mayor John J. Kelly merged Midvale into Wheeling by ordinance (the first time this had been done in Kane County). The merger caused some controversy because many Midvale citizens felt they were being left out while their counterparts in Erie were given more benefits such as new schools and businesses being built within the town borders; however most people viewed it as necessary becauseMidvale's infrastructure could not handle continuing growth on its own without help from Wheeling. On December 1st 1908 Mayor Kelly announced that he would be retiring after 36 years service; his successor would be Republican incumbent James Fenton who became mayor on January 4th 1909 after winning against Democrat Hiram Davenport Jr.. After serving two terms he decided not to seek re-election but instead sold his interest in the Village Trust Company which he had founded in 1902 for raising money for school construction projects and donated back to village coffers through annual dividends thereafter until his death in 1914. Indianola resident Jesse Laughlin then served one term as mayor until 1916 when he replaced Fenton upon Fenton's retirement due to ill health; Laughlin also served as treasurer during World War I before becomingFBI Director during World War II After about 20 years following Mr. Kelly’s example Mayor Clyde Ewing took office on January 3rd 1951 with just over 1 year old City Directory listing only 7 officers including Treasurer (Clyde Ewing) Chairman=George Kapp

It rapidly grew into one of Illinois' most important towns, and by 1855 it had reached its peak as a center for manufacturing and transportation.
