Wheeling, Illinois is a city in western Illinois that was founded on the banks of the Ohio River. The city's namesake, William Wheeling, was one of the founders of the United States. In 1872, when Wheeling became an incorporated town, it had a population of just under 10,000 people. By 1907, however, Wheeling's population had reached over 30,000. The growth of Wheeling was due to its location on the river and to its status as a manufacturing center for optics and other related products. Over time, Wheeling has become known for its artisanship in optical manufacture and for being home to one of the largest optical glass factories in America.

Wheeling is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois, located on the Ohio River. The population was 54,653 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kane County and home to Wheeling Steel Works, a large steel manufacturing plant which began production in 1892. The first Europeans to visit what is now Wheeling were French missionaries in 1778. The area became part of Ohio Territory when that territory was organized on July 14, 1800. On November 1, 1836, it was made a town by act of Congress within Kane County and named for George Stephenson's wagon road through central Illinois that had been begun two years earlier. In 1853, the Stephenson Company built a large mill complex at Wheeling which continued operation until 1963 when it closed because of pollution from operations in nearby Pittsburgh. The current steel mills began production at site in 1892 with construction completed on time thanks to donations from various industrialists including Andrew Carnegie and John Dreyfus Sr.. The company employed over one million people during its heyday and exported products all over the world. Production ended abruptly after World War II due to competition from more efficient plants abroad but has since been reborn as an energy producer with multiple facilities worldwide outputting electricity into the grid

Wheeling was founded on December 12, 1847 by Obadiah Morse and his family. The town is named after the Wheeling Creek which flows through it. It was originally a small community of around 100 people. In 1870, the population increased to 252 and in 1880 it reached 438. The Wheeling Malamute Manufacturing Company was founded in 1865 and became one of the largest malamute manufacturers in the United States. The town also became home to many other businesses such as a shoe factory, livery stable, grocery store, post office, schoolhouse and doctor's office. In 1916, Wheeling was renamed for General George Custer during World War I in order to remember him better.
