In 1840, Abraham Lincoln visited Wheeling while campaigning for reelection as president; during his speech he announced he would travel downriver to Cairo IL to campaign there instead of going across the state line to Peoria IL where he was needed for another election campaign After Lincolns visit, many Germans began moving into what would become Wheeling from nearby rural areas including Dripping Springs TX and Mount Vernon OH The German American community increased its size rapidly with grain crops being raised hereabouts until well into World War II when most of the buildings were destroyed by fire or hurricanes . Doris Kearney Wise (daughter of rambling US President James Krieger) played an important role in promoting tourism development around this time which led to some new construction being done within downtown Wheeling In recent years much redevelopment has taken place with Bloor Street running through downtown becoming a more commercial corridor with more businesses located along Erie Canal just east of Main Street
