Wheaton, Illinois is a town in northern Illinois and the county seat of Cook County. The population was 34,592 as of the 2010 census. The name " Wheaton" comes from the English word "whetstone," meaning to sharpen or shape. The town was founded in 1837 by John Whetstone and his brother-in-law Amos Stowe on land that had been donated by John Potter. It became a city in 1907, and was named after George Washington's Mount Vernon estate. Wheaton is located in the northern half of Chicago metropolitan area, bordered to the north by Lake Michigan and to the east by Gary, Indiana. It lies within Cook County on the eastern edge of downtown Chicago. The center of Wheaton is surrounded by Arlington Heights on one side and North Korea on the other side. The first European settler in what would become Wheaton was John Whetstone who arrived in 1837 with his family from Suffolk, England. He Clearwater Creek Township was organized December 11th, 1838 under direction of James Kahlman". On February 1st 1840 Daniel Dickson opened a store at Harewood Corner which later became known as Dickson's Store & Tavern". By 1850 there were 27 residents living here including 5 farmers." In 1907 Wheaton had a population of 24,635 making it 2nd largest city within Cook County behind Chicago." The first post office for this community open March 26th 1839 was known as Middleton but changed its name to Wheaton October 15th 1840 due to lack of settlers being willing to take up that name." This naming convention continued until May 25th 1862 when it reverted back to Middleton again due to no new settlers arriving." After reverting back to Middleton for just over two years there were 4 applications for yet another post office only 3 received permits; One from Abraham Lincoln and Two from Jonathan Edwards who both lived near where he did business." On July 8th 1864 an application for a new post office called Park Ridge came through but it also failed because no new settlers wanted to move into this part of Chicago." On November 9th 1865 Congress passed an act providing for four small communities (Park Ridge, Westchester Heights, Lombard Hillside & Winnetka) within Cook County – each one with its own Post Office – based upon petitioners' offers of land parcels adjacent thereto" In order for these towns not too much distance apart they all formed their own political districts while still sharing common Streets and buildings etc., with one exception: Park Ridge which formed its own district separate from any other." However even though these towns had their own Post Offices they continue using same Streets names until 1935 when Park Ridge formally changed its street name from Western Avenueto Roosevelt Road following annexation by Glenview ." Although all these towns shared some common Building materials such as Streets Name/number etc., they did not share same history or culture so eventually most residents unification happened outside aforementioned boundaries during Prohibition era when many Hawthorne residents moved into Wheaton specifically because prohibition made getting liquor harder.. In 1935 Glenview annexed Park Ridge so finally all those ties between these different municipalities come undone!"
Wheaton was Abraham Lincoln's home town in Illinois. He was born there on April 6, 1809. After serving in the United States Senate from March 4, 1861 to March 3, 1865, he became the 34th president of the United States on February 12, 1881.
